Closing out the week at NAMPO Cape with TotalEnergies.

This year's Heritage Month theme is Reimagine our heritage institutions for a new era.

It is a better prompt than it first sounds.

Heritage institutions are the museums, galleries, archives and cultural sites that hold a country’s memory. Most are treated as places for sightseeing. Very few are treated as places where magic still happens.

We have spent a fair share of our time building rooms across the continent, and the venues say a lot.

The rooms our guests still talk about years afterwards were gardens, galleries, working buildings and places with a history of their own. Not because they were unusual, but because they already hold a deep meaning before we arrived.

Living heritage is not only what we preserve. It is what we are still willing to use. And use with pride.

Some productions stay with you long after the final cue.
In 2008, following the success of the first Vuka Sizwe Benefit Concert honouring Busi Mhlongo, we returned for the second SABC Vuka Sizwe Concert — this time a tribute to Saartjie Baartman.

Broadcast live on SABC2youbelong from Johannesburg's Constitution Hill, the production brought together some of South Africa's most powerful female voices in music and poetry, including LIRA, Tu Nokwe, Zonke Dikana, Bucie, Zamajobe, Lebo Mashile, Ntsiki Mazwai and Diana Ferrus.

But this was about far more than a stage and a line-up.
Created in support of the SABC's 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children, Vuka Sizwe used music, poetry, dance and live television to reflect on Saartjie Baartman's story — and on the dignity, strength and voices of South African women.

For Mason Africa, producing a live television event of this significance was both an enormous responsibility and a privilege.
It was also part of something that had begun to define our work in those early years: using the power of live experience to give important African stories a platform.

Nearly two decades later, that belief remains.
The stages have become bigger.
The footprint has grown across Africa.
But the purpose behind the work has endured.
We don't simply tell Africa's stories.
We build the platforms that shape them.

As Women’s Month draws to a close, we look back at a moment in our journey that celebrated an extraordinary African woman and the power of her voice.

In October 2007, South Africa came together for the Vuka Sizwe Benefit Concert: Honouring Busi Mhlongo, a live television production broadcast nationally on SABC News from Johannesburg's historic Old Park Station.

It was a celebration of an artist who refused to be confined by genre or convention. A woman who took the sounds of South Africa, and particularly the traditions of maskandi, onto the world stage, entirely on her own terms.

Some of South Africa's most remarkable artists came together to honour her, among them Sibongile Khumalo, Dorothy Masuka, Thandiswa Mazwai, Simphiwe Dana, Gloria Bosman, Ringo Madlingozi and Ray Phiri.

Being part of bringing that moment to life remains a special chapter in our story.

Because long before we found the words to describe what we do today, we understood something that still guides us:

Africa's stories deserve extraordinary platforms.

And Africa's women deserve to be seen, heard and celebrated.

Busi Mhlongo's voice travelled far beyond our borders. Her influence travelled even further.

This Women's Month, we remember the women whose courage, creativity and originality opened doors for generations to follow. A voice. A legacy. An African original.
