This Hamburger Day we’re looking at the Battle of the Buns!
For years giants, Mcdonald’s and Burger King have gone head-to-head with their advertising.
One of our favourite battle moments was when Burger King launched “The Moldy Whopper” campaign in 2020.
In response to social media coverage showcasing how Mcdonald’s burgers had allegedly not rotted even after years, Burger King took a radical and unconventional approach that paid off - BIG TIME!
Why did it work?
The ad demonstrated the beauty of no artificial preservatives - tapping into social trends and a movement towards wanting a healthier lifestyle.
Since then Mcdonald’s has defended itself and experiments have been done to determine whether this phenomenon could happen to any burger.
Regardless of whether the Mcdonald’s myth is fact or fiction, Burger King’s marketing was timely, on-trend and provocative.
