Defining Creative Leadership: How I understand the what, how, and why it exists.

Creative leadership is about designing, executing, and tracking behaviors that align teams toward shared, meaningful goals.

Why is it important? šŸ¤”

Creative leadership challenges leader's ability to guide teammates into long-term thinkers that are their own competition. Thus exceeding their own expectations and benchmarks.

This practice of continuous learning creates teammates who deeply understand brand assets and are keen on making their organization the best for decades.šŸ’Æ

Key Tactics for Creative Leaders:

1. Clarify Brand Assets
It’s essential for team members to understand—not just memorize—the organization’s unique selling propositions, values, brand promise, mission, vision, and target audience.

šŸ”µValues should be verbs. Values should challenge the team's problem solving skills and cultivate great work.

These brand assets give purpose of work by reminding everyone why the organization exists and how to achieve its goals. A team that genuinely cares about their work quality will outperform those who just want to get the job done.

2. Be a Teacher, Not Just an Instructor

Creative leaders focus on teaching rather than issuing commands. They do not give orders, they demonstrate.

They recognize that they started somewhere so they know the challenges faced by junior teammates. Hence its important to clarify roles, expectations, and performance indicators of each teammate.

Fostering a respectful environment, they strengthens team dynamics and collaboration. A culture that embraces mistakes encourages accountability and growth.

šŸ”µAs my boxing coach says, ā€œAim to win, prepare to loseā€ā€”a mindset that keeps us humble and resilient.

3. Embrace Improvisation.

Be open to new ideas from your teammates. Being aware that things can go wrong allows your teammates to practice improvising to make the project better.
Clear communication of project goals and KPIs is crucial, as unclear instructions can lead to unmet expectations and poor results.

šŸ”µCreating a respectful and inclusive environment strengthens team dynamics and fosters collaboration.

4. Know Your Team

Building rapport by learning about your team members—their names, interests, and backgrounds—builds trust and respect. Making it easy to lead with respect and not with force.

This practice, inspired by my mentor Ms. Zandile Flatela, Principal of Bonamelo Primary School, allowed open communication.

She made it easy for the team to ask questions. When teammates struggled, she inquired about the obstacles and offered support to make their jobs easier without favoritism.
And provided feedback by criticizing privately and complimenting publicly.

This topic was inspired by Mr. , Founder of LiMA Academy, during his presentation on creative leadership at the Leader.co.za Summit this September.

Happy Women's Day to all the phenomenal women.

Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
