American Express celebrated South Africa’s vibrant art scene with the Amex ZA Series, bringing premium experiences to Johannesburg and Cape Town while connecting cardmembers to the country’s creative heartbeat.

In Joburg, we partnered with the Keyes Art Mile for their monthly Art Night to create exclusive access for cardmembers through the MIX Bar, offering curated cocktails, canapés, and a private space to experience the city’s cultural energy. The strategy enhanced the public program without disrupting it, reinforcing Amex’s premium positioning and programme to local arts.

In Cape Town, Zeitz MOCAA in partnership with First Thursdays, became a stage for immersive VIP experiences, with projections of winning artwork from the Amex ZA Graphic Arts Challenge transforming the museum space. Branded elements from photo-booths to lounges invited attendees to interact, share, and engage, creating a visual and social media footprint that amplified the brand.

The series connected communities, showcased talent, and offered cardmembers meaningful engagement, proving that cultural sponsorship can be both immersive and impactful.

IQOQO is a platform that brings South Africa’s creative and cultural industries into one accessible space, connecting local talent with global opportunities.

Launched in 2020 by BBA in partnership with the French Embassy and the French Institute in South Africa (IFAS), IQOQO offers a clear view of nine sectors. From animation and architecture to XR and visual arts, IQOQO shows who’s who, what’s happening, and how to connect.

We designed the brand and built the digital platform to act as a hub for creatives, supporting profile registration, networking, and discovery. Training sessions and panel discussions were rolled out across South Africa to help emerging talent navigate the network and showcase their work to the world.

What emerged is a living, growing ecosystem helping South Africa’s creative industries connect, collaborate, and thrive globally.

IQOQO is a space where ideas, talent, and opportunity meet, shaping the future of South African creativity on a global stage.

How do we reimagine the spaces that hold our stories?

Reimagining Heritage, Archives and Museums: Today/Tomorrow brought together over 400 delegates and 95 speakers from 13 countries to explore that very question — envisioning museums not as static vaults of the past, but as active agents of social imagination and change.

An initiative of the Institut français d’Afrique du Sud (IFAS) and the Embassy of France, the project invited us to shape every element, from strategy and identity to curation and experience design.

Together, we built a platform for dialogue between artists, curators, technologists, and policymakers, asking what a museum of the future might look like in an African context.

Over three days, the convening blended conversation and creativity, from performances by poets Diana Ferrus and Siphokazi Jonas to a design thinking workshop led by the Hasso Plattner D-School Afrika. What emerged was a living laboratory of ideas, blending innovation with tradition and giving heritage space to grow.

It reignited a global dialogue that shifted the focus from simply preserving the past to imagining new futures. In the end, it became more than an event, it was a collective step toward reimagining how the past can shape tomorrow.

When 58 nations, 300 choirs, and over 16,500 singers came together in Tshwane, the world didn’t just compete, it sang in unison.

The World Choir Games, known as the Olympics of choral music, made their African debut in 2018. We were brought in to give the event an identity as bold, joyful, and unifying as its mission.
Drawing inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s centenary, we reimagined him as a conductor, bringing together voices from across the globe.

The logo, a celebration of harmony and , was paired with a vibrant palette drawn from the South African flag. From branding and signage to merchandise, AV promos, and daily newspaper inserts, we created a cohesive visual language that carried the same warmth and rhythm as the music itself.

The result was a world-class celebration of culture and connection, showing that when people sing together, borders disappear.

Comics speak in every

When the Johannesburg Art Gallery and the French Institute of South Africa teamed up for The Art of Comics, they set out to show how storytelling through illustration connects people across cultures. The exhibition, which was the first of its kind in South Africa, brought together 89 works from local and French artists, celebrating the power of visual narrative.

We partnered with them to bring this vision to life through vibrant branding, exhibition , and an educational supplement that encouraged visitors to make their own comics. Artist Loyiso Mkize’s poster added a local hero’s touch, while a virtual reality experience based on the Rivonia Trial offered a glimpse into through innovation.

The exhibition drew over 6,000 visitors, inspired 2,000 school learners, and sparked R9 million worth of conversation proving that art doesn’t just hang on walls, it brings people together.

Art moves us and for over 20 years, the annual BASA Awards have been celebrating how business and the arts can shape South Africa. From healing past divides to tackling today’s socio-economic challenges, the awards recognise corporates investing in the local arts scene while showcasing the power of creativity.

For 10 years, BBA served as the lead creative agency for BASA, designing annual themes, collateral, and campaigns that brought each year’s story to life. Our work included brand refreshes, integrated marketing, social campaigns, signage, and digital design, all supporting BASA’s mission to connect business and art in meaningful ways.

Every year, a unique trophy was commissioned for each winner, turning the awards into collectible works of art themselves. From concept to creation, these pieces captured the essence of the annual theme and celebrated South Africa’s vibrant creative talent.

“I step into this role with a deep belief in the power of the creative economy to shape South Africa’s future—not only to inspire, but to generate economic opportunity, create livelihoods, and unlock the country’s full creative and economic potential,”

– Beth Arendse, BASA’s incoming CEO

Through ten years of collaboration, we guided the Awards’ creative direction, produced seven years of in-depth reports, and drove over R20 million in media impact.

What if cities were designed for health from the ground up? That question drives Professor Tolullah Oni, a public health physician and epidemiologist reshaping how we think about urban life.

Through UrbanBetter, she’s building healthier African through collaboration, citizen science and transdisciplinary research. Our brief was to create four distinct but connected brands, UrbanBetter, Cityzens, Academy and Oni et al., and bring them together as one cohesive ecosystem.

We developed a bold identity inspired by West African Adinkra symbols, with the logo combining a cross and a dot to represent health and place.

Digitally, we built a connected platform ecosystem under urbanbetter.science. Its most ambitious platform, Cityzens, empowers everyday people to track local conditions, run health campaigns and contribute globally.

Together, the four identities form a single designed to mobilise 100,000 Cityzens and 100 Hubs over the next decade, building healthier, more resilient cities across Africa and beyond.

UrbanBetter is a global science movement, rooted in , reimagining the of tomorrow.
