Khuma Film Festival Mentees continue to shine !

Khuma Film Festival is incredibly proud to celebrate the continued growth and achievements of our festival mentees as they take meaningful steps towards becoming the filmmakers of tomorrow.

During the 2nd Khuma Film Festival, our Mentor & Head Workshop Facilitator, Vincent Moloi, identified a group of outstanding learners who demonstrated exceptional potential, eagerness to learn and a passion for storytelling.

We are thrilled to share that these young talents have continued their journey through mentorship and have now had the opportunity to contribute to a film production in Taung.

This is exactly why we believe in creating platforms that expose young people to real opportunities within the film industry ; talent needs opportunity, mentorship and someone who believes in it.

A special thank you to the teachers who accompanied and supported the learners, Ms Kgutsitse Phumo and Dr Tshona, for your commitment to ensuring that the youth of Khuma continue to thrive, explore and grow through filmmaking.

And to Vincent, words cannot fully express our gratitude for your dedication, passion and unwavering commitment to the film industry. Your investment in nurturing young talent is helping shape the next generation of storytellers.

The journey continues. The talent is growing. The stories are waiting to be told. See you at the 3rd Khuma Film Festival 23-26 February 2027

When South Africa Wore Its Diversity With Pride

Heritage Day this year felt beautifully different. There was something almost magical about watching South Africans reclaim, celebrate and proudly express their cultural diversity. From the streets to community events, family gatherings and social media timelines, the country seemed to be dressed in its identity.

Driving around during Heritage Day week, attending events and simply scrolling through social media, one could see South Africans from different backgrounds embracing the day in a way that felt deeply personal. White, Indian, Black, Coloured and Asian South Africans proudly wore beautiful cultural attire, each expression telling a story of where we come from and, perhaps more importantly, where we belong.

But what stood out to me most was that it wasn’t necessarily about who was wearing what. It was about how people felt. There was joy. There was pride. There was curiosity. There was belonging.

Tswana people wore Zulu-inspired outfits. Afrikaans South Africans embraced Tswana attire. Xhosa people wore Tsonga clothing. People stepped outside the boundaries of their own cultures and, even if just for a day, celebrated the richness of another. And that was the beauty of it. We were reminded that South Africa’s diversity does not have to be a dividing line. It can be the very thing that brings us closer together.

For years, we have spoken about the rainbow nation, Ubuntu and our country’s incredible cultural diversity. But sometimes these concepts can feel like words we repeat rather than values we actively experience. Heritage Day gave us a glimpse of what it looks like when we actually live them. It was beautiful to see people wearing another culture’s attire not as an act of appropriation or competition, but as an expression of appreciation, respect and connection. In those moments, the clothing became more than fabric. It became a conversation. It said: “I see you. I appreciate where you come from. I am curious about your culture. And I understand that your heritage is also part of the South African story.”

Africa Day is celebrated annually on 25 May to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963. The OAU later evolved into the African Union (AU) in 2002. The day serves as a global celebration of African identity, liberation from colonialism, cultural heritage, and continental unity.
