Have you ever misplaced your phone or struggled to recall a familiar name? Many people start noticing such lapses once they reach their 40s. While ageing naturally influences memory and focus, nutrition plays a crucial role in keeping the brain strong.

Research from Harvard, which tracked more than 100,000 people over three decades, found that maintaining a balanced diet in midlife significantly improved the chances of reaching older age with good mental and physical health. September is recognised in South Africa as Su***de Awareness Month, drawing attention to the country’s growing mental health challenges. Access to professional help is limited, waiting lists can stretch for months, and private therapy remains unaffordable for many. In this gap, artificial intelligence has begun to step in, offering new ways for people to manage their emotional wellbeing.
AI-based support comes in different forms.

Some people rely on generative AI platforms for stress management tips. Others use specialised apps such as Woebot or Wysa, designed to deliver cognitive behavioural therapy techniques. There are also character-driven AIs that simulate friendship or intimacy, creating digital companions. According to a Dartmouth study, these tools can reduce anxiety and depression symptoms for a short time, but the benefits often fade if not paired with ongoing professional care.

Health expert and Unu Health founder, Tania Joffe, explained that spring’s increased sunlight has powerful benefits. According to her, exposure to more daylight supports vitamin D production, stabilises blood sugar, strengthens the heart, and uplifts mood. Imagine waking up and forgetting the way to your favourite café—or even the name of someone you deeply care about. For over 57 million people globally, this is not a passing moment but a daily struggle. It’s called dementia, and it’s more preventable than many people realise.

World Brain Day was recently marked on July 22, with medical experts urging people to treat brain health as a lifelong priority, not just a concern for the elderly.
