Watch | Business Community and Mining Sector Step Forward to Support Matlosana's Recovery

Klerksdorp - The Executive Mayor of the City of Matlosana Local Municipality, Fikile Mahlophe, says government, business, and investors must work together to address the socio-economic challenges facing the city.

Speaking at the Local Economic Development (LED) Business Breakfast, Mahlophe acknowledged the persistent challenges of unemployment, crime, and deteriorating infrastructure, which continue to impact investment and economic growth across Matlosana.

Despite these challenges, the Mayor said the municipality remains committed to collaborating with investors and stakeholders to find practical solutions aimed at restoring confidence in the local economy.

"We have had a meeting with Harmony Gold Mine and they have pledged their support to invest in cameras in the City of Matlosana. We have already signed a contract with them and work is underway to install the cameras," said Mahlophe.

The camera project is expected to strengthen crime prevention efforts and improve public safety within the municipality. Private security companies have also expressed interest in accessing the camera network to assist law enforcement agencies in combating criminal activity, particularly within the Klerksdorp Central Business District.

Mahlophe further revealed that members of the business community have indicated their willingness to partner with the municipality on infrastructure-related projects. According to business leaders, improving roads, public facilities, and service delivery is critical to reviving investor confidence and stimulating economic activity.

The discussions come at a time when Matlosana continues to grapple with the long-term economic effects of mine closures, which have contributed to job losses, reduced economic activity, and increased pressure on municipal resources.

Stakeholders at the breakfast emphasized that stronger partnerships between government, business, mining companies, and community structures will be essential in rebuilding the local economy and creating opportunities for growth and employment.

Matlosana Service Delivery Movement Unveils Mayoral Candidate for 2026 Elections

Klerksdorp - The Matlosana Service Delivery Movement (MSDM) has officially unveiled Kgotso Sindi as its mayoral candidate for the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections, scheduled to take place on 4 November 2026.

According to the movement, Sindi has accepted the nomination and will lead the party's campaign in its bid to govern the City of Matlosana Local Municipality.

Sindi, who has been a prominent voice within the Matlosana Service Delivery Movement on issues relating to governance, accountability, service delivery and community development, now faces the challenge of convincing voters that the movement can provide an alternative to the municipality's current leadership.

The announcement comes as political parties and independent movements intensify preparations for the 2026 municipal elections, which will determine the composition of local councils across South Africa.

As campaigning gathers momentum, residents can expect political parties to outline their plans for addressing key challenges facing Matlosana, including unemployment, infrastructure backlogs, economic development, crime and service delivery.

Watch | Government and Business Must Work Together to Revive Matlosana's Economy

Klerksdorp - Daddy Khuselo of Mbuso Management Solutions has called for stronger collaboration between government, business, and other stakeholders to drive economic growth and development in the City of Matlosana.

Speaking on the importance of partnerships at the Business Breakfast, Khuselo said Matlosana possesses all the key ingredients required for economic success, including human capital, natural resources, physical infrastructure, and other strategic assets.

However, he noted that the municipality continues to face serious socio-economic challenges such as high unemployment, poverty, and limited economic opportunities for many residents.

According to Khuselo, the solution does not require creating entirely new strategies.

"There is no need to reinvent the wheel. We should simply go back to what we previously agreed upon, bring all stakeholders back on board, and focus on implementation," he said.

He emphasized that meaningful progress can only be achieved when government, the private sector, community organizations, and residents work together towards a common vision for economic recovery and sustainable development.

Khuselo's remarks come at a time when municipalities across South Africa are seeking practical solutions to stimulate local economies, attract investment, create jobs, and improve service delivery.

Development | N12 West Corridor Catalytic Project Back in Full Swing, Says Nkala

Klerksdorp - The much-anticipated N12 West Corridor Catalytic Housing Project, stretching across Freemanville, Uraniaville, Meiringspark, Jouberton, Alabama, Manzilpark and Tigane, is once again gaining momentum, according to project representative Nhlanhla Nkala.

Speaking on the sidelines of the recent Business Breakfast, Nkala dismissed rumours that the project had come to a standstill, insisting that construction activities never completely ceased.
"The project never stopped per se. We have been working. We reduced the number of people because of funding issues that had not yet been resolved, but we remained on site and continued working," said Nkala.

He confirmed that construction is actively underway, with 30 houses currently being built. The completed units are expected to be handed over to their respective beneficiaries upon completion.

Nkala expressed optimism that initiatives such as the City of Matlosana Business Breakfast would help accelerate investment, development and economic growth in the area, while creating an environment in which projects can progress without disruption.

In a further boost for local development prospects, Nkala revealed that plans are underway for a major commercial investment in Jouberton. He hinted that later this year a proposed16,000-square-metre shopping mall and petrol station development situated along the N12 corridor is expected to be officially launched around August and September.

Should the project proceed as planned, it could significantly contribute to economic activity, job creation and improved access to retail services for residents across the western corridor of the City of Matlosana.

Maklera Magazine will continue to monitor developments surrounding both the housing project and the proposed commercial investment.
