From Cape Town to Switzerland — one brewery at a time. šŸ‡ØšŸ‡šŸŗšŸ‡¹šŸ‡æ

Our Swiss Troopy friends Michael Sommerhalder and Jasmin Forster continue their overland journey from Cape Town to Switzerland — turning the route into a true Beer Expedition across Africa.

Their latest stop: Twiga Brewery in Arusha.

What makes this visit even more special is the connection behind it. Twiga was founded by fellow Swiss national, Raphael Flury, an entrepreneur and lawyer who fell in love with East Africa while backpacking and chose to build his life and business there. Today, he also runs a certified organic spice production company on Zanzibar.

At Twiga, Michael and Jasmin had a fantastic visit — but, true to their mission, they didn’t arrive empty-handed.

As our travelling ā€œBeer Postā€, they delivered Beer Passports and stamps, connecting Twiga to a growing network of independent beer explorers across Africa and beyond.

Beer Troopers,
If you’re heading to Clarens this weekend — bring your Beer Passport.

Harper Brewing Company has invited us to collaborate this year…
and we’re bringing back something fun:

BEER BINGO 2
What is Beer Bingo?
Beer Bingo is a festival game designed to get you exploring.
Instead of standing at one tap all afternoon, you’ll receive a Bingo card filled with:
• Different beer styles
• Brewery types
• Festival challenges

Your mission:
āœ” Visit different brewery stands
āœ” Taste outside your usual comfort zone
āœ” Collect stamps or confirmations
āœ” Complete a row — or go for the full card

It’s simple.
It’s social.
It pushes you to discover new brewers.

And most importantly — it gets you talking to people.

Because that’s what this community is about.

From Cape Town to Switzerland — in a trusted Land Cruiser Troop Carrier.

Our Swiss Troopy couple, Michael and Jasmin, are currently driving from South Africa back home to Switzerland. What started as an overland adventure turned into a full-blown Beer Expedition after a chance meet-up with Beer Troopers in Durban.

Their latest stop?
Banange Brewing Company in Kampala. Read the full story on our blog: https://beertroopy.com/banange-brewing-company-kampala/

In Kampala, they were welcomed by Adam Cameron, Joan Karen Nambooze and Khaled from Banange Brewing Company. While they enjoyed the brewery tour and tasting, this wasn’t just another taproom visit.

Michael and Jasmin are acting as our official ā€œBeer Postā€: They’re delivering Beer Passports and brewery stamps to independent breweries along their route. No courier service. No tracking numbers. Just real people carrying real stories across borders.

Instead of parcels, they deliver connection.
Instead of envelopes, they hand over passports that link Africa’s brewing pioneers to a global community of explorers.

This is what the Beer Troopers community looks like in action:
Real people. Real roads. Real breweries.

Ready to Explore?
Find Banange Brewing Company — and many other independent breweries across Africa — on the Beer Troopers Map.

Plan your route.
Step into the taproom.
Meet the brewers behind the tanks.

And don’t forget your Beer Passportā„¢.

Every visit is a story.
Every stamp is proof you were there.
Every brewery you support strengthens Africa’s independent beer culture.

The more breweries I listen to, the more I realise how universal the challenges are — no matter the country.

Licensing delays.
Cash flow pressure.
Power cuts.
Equipment, landlords, distribution, and educating the market.

Different accents. Same conversations.

What stands out every time is the resilience — adapting, building things yourself, leaning on community, and showing up even when the road gets bumpy.

Independent brewing isn’t easy anywhere.
But that shared struggle is exactly what binds this community together.

Thanks for this Review:
ā€œWe’re not here for free beer. šŸ»
It’s the community and the journey that matter.

The Beer Passport is a great conversation starter — a way to recognise kindred souls, support the people with the determination to run a brewery, and acknowledge the passion it takes to make it happen. It’s tough, and those who do it deserve something back.

Every new idea, question, or decision is followed with real interest.
Looking forward to meeting in person one day… somewhere, sometime. (Though us retired folk are very busy šŸ˜„)

Beer Passport & Beer Troopers Map

Over the past few months, I’ve been doing some quiet work behind the scenes.

Not launching something new.
Not adding features.

But asking a harder question: what are we actually building — and why does it matter?

The Beer Passportā„¢ was always meant to be printed — something you hold, stamp, and fill with stories. At the same time, we needed a simple way to keep brewery info up to date.

Using the same word for both caused confusion.

So we simplified.

• The Beer Passportā„¢ is printed — for remembering the journey
• The Beer Troopers Map is digital — for finding your way

One sentence now holds it all together:

The map helps you find your way.
The passport helps you remember where you’ve been.
The community gives the journey meaning.

Beer Troopers aren’t chasing discounts. They show up to support independent breweries, meet the people behind the beer, and be part of something bigger.

No forcing.
No over-explaining.

Just a clearer path forward.

Our Why, proven in the wild.

ā€œI would never have found them without you — and I’m glad we stayed long enough to hear their story.ā€

That single sentence is the ultimate win for our brand.

It mirrors our Why almost word for word — not as an idea, but as a lived experience.
It tells us the work is doing exactly what it’s meant to do: helping people find places they would otherwise miss, and creating the conditions to stay, listen, and understand.

This proves our mission isn’t theoretical.
It’s happening — on the road, at the table, in conversation.

When someone says this, it means:
• discovery happened
• presence followed
• a story was shared
• and the visit mattered

That’s not marketing.
That’s the work, done properly.

Beer Troopers is a global community of explorers.
We go out of our way to meet the legends who make the beer.

We follow the road to independent breweries — for the story as much as the beer.
Independent breweries come first, but other great beer destinations are part of the journey.

This group is where Beer Troopers connect, share, and compare notes.

What we talk about here:
• Community – road stories, brewery visits, recommendations with context
• Beer Troopers Map – discoveries, updates, and places worth the detour
• Beer Passportā„¢ – stamps, journeys, memories, and real moments

No hype. No ratings wars. No shortcuts.
Just people who care about how they explore — and who they meet along the way.

If the road matters to you as much as the glass, you’re in the right place.

One thing we’ve learned from our nearly 5,000 Beer Passports holders:

When Beer Troopers walk into a taproom, they’re not chasing discounts or freebies. They’re there to support independent beer, meet the people behind it, and be recognised as part of the wider beer community.

A simple stamp in their Beer Passportā„¢ is often all the acknowledgement they’re looking for.
