A powerful way to build a business is to first understand how it actually works — on paper, in structure, and in reality.

That’s exactly what our Business Model Canvas Workshop is about: helping entrepreneurs, creatives, and business builders map out their ideas in a clear, practical way — from value proposition and customers, to income streams and operations.

The next session will take place on 2 June 📅

If you’ve been trying to grow your business but feel like things are scattered or unclear, this is the space to get clarity and direction.

Seats are limited, and bookings are now open.

Accompanied by iNduna uMbuyazi, today our Director Nqobile MaXulu Nene and team visited 5 community gardens at KwaMbonambi — Sabokwe, Qalakancane, Mananga, Vukuy’thathe and Mzingazi — and one thing is clear: there is real potential here.

We found strong agricultural activity, but also key areas that need to be strengthened:
• Governance structures in some gardens
• Limited youth involvement
• Water access challenges
• Safety concerns

At the same time, the opportunities are powerful. There is clear potential for local agroprocessing, and Qalakancane in particular is showing promise for beauty product development — conversations are ongoing.

The biggest takeaway from all visits is that if we want to unlock opportunities — funding, markets, agroprocessing — we must be structured and ready. This means:
• Being registered (not operating as individuals)
• Being organised
• Being consistent

Most organisations do not fund individuals — they fund registered, structured businesses.

This is where the real work begins.

We are now moving towards building a committed group of farmers and gardens who are ready to position themselves for:
• Market access
• Agroprocessing opportunities
• Participation in upcoming initiatives like the pop-up farmers market

If you are serious about being part of this journey, connect with us. Complete this onboarding link. https://form.jotform.com/250498795539578

The opportunity is there. The question is — are we ready for it?

The Spaza Shop Support Fund is a South African government initiative designed to empower and strengthen locally-owned informal retail outlets, known as spaza shops, in townships and rural areas.

Here's a breakdown of what the fund offers:
• Financial Assistance Eligible businesses can receive up to R100,000 in a blended package. This typically includes a R40,000 grant for inventory, a R50,000 blended grant/loan for shop upgrades (like fridges, shelving, and point-of-sale systems), and R10,000 for business training and digital tools.
• Eligibility Criteria To qualify, spaza shops must be 100% South African-owned, operate in a township or rural area, be registered with the local municipality, and be actively managed by the owner. Priority is often given to youth (18-35), women, and people with disabilities, though the fund is open to all entrepreneurs regardless of age.
• Purpose The fund aims to improve daily operations, increase sales, enhance food affordability and safety, build operational capacity through training, and foster long-term sustainability for these small businesses.
• Outreach and Support Organizations like Aiyana Business Development, in collaboration with SEDFA (Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency), play a vital role in ensuring spaza shop owners are aware of this funding. They initiate SME talks and conduct workshops, especially in rural areas, to inform owners about the fund and guide them through the application process, helping with necessary documents and how to complete them.

Several government bodies collaborate on this initiative, including the Department of Small Business Development, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic), and the National Empowerment Fund (NEF).

Mashobane Brush Masters

David Khumalo of Mashobane Brush Masters at Nhlabane - Mbonambi - has been in the game for years—long before the business was even formally registered in 2005. His journey in painting and property services started back in 1994, and over the years his work has reached different parts of KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.

From Superspar Supermarket and a community hall in St Lucia, to nine creches in Gwavumana, halls, private homes, and large projects like a double-storey mansion in Nhlabane—his work speaks for itself. As he says, “Ngingabala ngithin kodwa” because the list is long.

Mashobane Brush Masters offers:
• Painting Services
• General Cleaning
• Garden Services

Aiyana Business Development has supported Mr Khumalo with his CSD registration, setting up his business banking, and developing his professional business profile so that his story and services are properly positioned for growth.

He is now in business management training with Aiyana, with the goal of becoming fully funding-ready and expanding Mashobane Brush Masters to the next level.
