WHEN SHOULD YOU SEEK HELP FOR EXCESSIVE DAYTIME SLEEPINESS?
Feeling sleepy once in a while is normal. When sleepiness becomes a pattern, it deserves attention.
Consider speaking to a healthcare professional if you regularly:
- Struggle to stay awake during the day despite getting enough sleep
- Fall asleep unintentionally at work, school, or in conversations
- Need frequent naps to get through the day
- Experience sudden muscle weakness triggered by emotions like laughter (cataplexy)
- Experience sleep paralysis or vivid, dream-like experiences when falling asleep or waking up
- Find sleepiness interfering with work, school, driving, or daily activities
Persistent excessive daytime sleepiness is not just about being tired. It can be a sign of an underlying sleep disorder like narcolepsy and can affect your safety and quality of life.
Don't brush it off as laziness. If this sounds familiar, it's time to seek help.
