Long air hoses are often necessary on construction, mining and drilling sites—but the longer the hose, the greater the potential pressure drop.

Pressure drop occurs as compressed air moves through the hose and encounters resistance. If too much pressure is lost before the air reaches the tool, equipment may operate slowly, inefficiently or below its required performance level.

Several factors influence pressure drop:

🔹 Hose length – Longer hoses create more resistance.
🔹 Internal diameter – A hose that is too narrow can restrict airflow significantly.
🔹 Air demand – High-consumption tools require sufficient hose capacity.
🔹 Couplings and bends – Undersized fittings, sharp bends and unnecessary connections add restriction.
🔹 Hose condition – Kinks, damage and internal contamination can reduce airflow.

Simply increasing the compressor pressure is not always the best solution. Selecting the correct hose diameter, reducing unnecessary hose length and using properly sized couplings can help deliver the required pressure and airflow at the tool.

Portable Diesel Compressors for Borehole Drilling Applications

Borehole drilling demands a dependable supply of compressed air—especially when operating pneumatic drilling equipment or down-the-hole hammers in remote locations.

A portable diesel compressor provides the mobility and power needed to support drilling operations where an electrical supply may be limited or unavailable. During drilling, compressed air helps power the equipment, cool the drill bit and carry rock cuttings out of the borehole.

Selecting the correct compressor is essential. Important factors include:

🔹 Required operating pressure
🔹 Airflow requirements
🔹 Borehole depth and diameter
🔹 Ground and rock conditions
🔹 Drilling method and equipment
🔹 Site altitude and ambient temperature

An undersized compressor may slow pe*******on rates and reduce productivity, while a properly matched unit can help the drilling team work more efficiently.

Airstream’s portable diesel compressors are designed for demanding site conditions and can be supplied with or without a trailer, depending on your operational and transport requirements.

How Altitude and Heat Affect Portable Diesel Compressor Output

Portable diesel compressors often operate in demanding outdoor conditions—but altitude and high ambient temperatures can affect their performance.

At higher altitudes, the air becomes less dense. This means the compressor and diesel engine draw in less oxygen and a lower mass of air with each intake cycle. As a result, the engine may produce less power and the compressor’s effective air delivery can decrease.

High temperatures create similar challenges. Hot air is less dense, while the compressor’s cooling system must work harder to control operating temperatures. In extreme conditions, the machine may derate, run hotter than normal or shut down to protect critical components.

Before selecting a portable diesel compressor, consider:

The altitude of the worksite
Expected ambient temperatures
Required working pressure
Total airflow needed by all connected tools
Ventilation and clearance around the compressor
The manufacturer’s applicable derating guidelines

A compressor sized only according to sea-level performance may struggle to meet demand on a hot, high-altitude site. Correct sizing provides the necessary performance margin and helps keep your air supply reliable.

Let Airstream Compressors help you select the right portable diesel compressor for your operating conditions.

WHEN IS A DIESEL COMPRESSOR WITHOUT A TRAILER THE BETTER CHOICE?

A trailer-mounted diesel compressor offers convenient towing between locations—but a trailer is not always necessary.

A diesel compressor supplied without a trailer can be the better choice when:

🔹 The compressor will remain at one site for an extended period
🔹 It will be permanently mounted on a truck, service vehicle or custom skid
🔹 Space on site is limited
🔹 The unit will be transported by crane or forklift
🔹 Road towing is not required
🔹 Additional trailer maintenance and licensing are unnecessary
🔹 Greater protection against unauthorised towing or theft is preferred

Without the trailer assembly, the compressor has a compact footprint and can be integrated more easily into specialised vehicles, workshops, mining operations, construction sites and industrial installations.

The correct choice depends on how often the compressor must be moved, the available handling equipment and the conditions at the site.

Airstream Portable Diesel Compressors are available with or without a trailer, allowing you to select the configuration best suited to your application.

🔧 SELECTING DIESEL COMPRESSOR AIR FLOW ACCORDING TO THE NUMBER OF TOOLS

Choosing a portable diesel compressor is not only about pressure—the compressor must also deliver enough air flow to operate all the tools that will be used simultaneously.

Each pneumatic tool has its own air-consumption requirement, usually measured in CFM or m³/min. To calculate the required compressor capacity:

✅ List every tool that may operate at the same time
✅ Confirm the air consumption of each tool
✅ Add their air-flow requirements together
✅ Allow an additional 20–30% capacity for pressure losses, air leaks and changing demand
✅ Confirm that the compressor can supply the required flow at the correct working pressure

For example, if three tools each require 60 CFM and will operate simultaneously, the combined demand is 180 CFM. Adding a suitable safety margin means selecting a compressor capable of supplying approximately 220–235 CFM at the required pressure.

It is also important to consider how the tools are used. Tools operating intermittently may not require their full combined air demand continuously, while applications such as sandblasting, drilling or production work often require a stable, uninterrupted supply.

An undersized diesel compressor can cause:

❌ Pressure drops
❌ Reduced tool performance
❌ Slower completion times
❌ Excessive compressor loading
❌ Increased fuel consumption and wear

An oversized unit may increase fuel and operating costs unnecessarily. Correct sizing provides reliable performance, better efficiency and longer equipment life.

Let Airstream Compressors help you select the correct portable diesel compressor for your tools, pressure requirements and working conditions—with trailer and non-trailer options available.

⚙️ ASC-SPM-2 COMPRESSORS FOR CONTINUOUS 24-HOUR PRODUCTION

When production runs around the clock, your compressed-air system needs to keep pace with changing demand while maintaining reliable and efficient performance.

Airstream’s ASC-SPM-2 two-stage permanent-magnet variable-speed compressors are ideal for demanding industrial environments where compressed air is required throughout multiple shifts.

The two-stage compression process divides the compression workload between two stages, helping to improve operating efficiency and reduce the energy required to produce compressed air. Permanent-magnet variable-speed technology also adjusts the compressor’s output according to actual air demand, helping to minimise unnecessary power consumption during changing production cycles.

Benefits for continuous-production facilities include:

✅ Energy-efficient two-stage compression
✅ Air delivery matched to production demand
✅ Reduced unloading and wasted energy
✅ Stable compressed-air supply
✅ Suitable for demanding industrial applications
✅ Potentially lower lifetime operating costs

For reliable 24-hour operation, the compressor must be correctly sized, professionally installed and supported by a planned maintenance programme. Airstream Compressors can help assess your air demand and recommend the correct solution for your facility.

When should your factory upgrade from single-stage to two-stage ASC-SPM-2 technology?

A single-stage compressor can perform efficiently in many applications—but as production expands and compressed-air demand increases, a two-stage system may offer greater long-term efficiency.

The ASC-SPM-2 uses two compression stages instead of producing the required pressure in one stage. Interstage cooling reduces the temperature of the air before it enters the second stage, helping the compressor reach the required pressure with less energy.

Your factory may benefit from upgrading when:

✅ Compressed-air demand is consistently high
✅ The compressor operates for long periods or continuously
✅ Electricity costs represent a significant portion of operating expenses
✅ Production has expanded beyond the capacity of the current system
✅ More air delivery is required from an appropriately sized compressor
✅ Reducing lifecycle costs has become a priority

Two-stage compression is particularly valuable in larger, high-demand industrial applications where even a modest improvement in efficiency can produce meaningful savings over many operating hours.

However, upgrading should always be based on your actual air demand, operating pressure, production cycle and existing system performance. A compressed-air assessment can help determine whether ASC-SPM-2 technology is the right investment for your factory.

How Two-Stage Compression Improves the Efficiency of ASC‑SPM‑2 Compressors

Producing compressed air requires energy, which is why the way air is compressed can significantly affect the efficiency and operating cost of your system.

Instead of compressing air to the required pressure in one step, the ASC‑SPM‑2 uses two-stage compression. Air is partially compressed during the first stage, cooled, and then compressed to its final pressure during the second stage.

This process offers several important advantages:

✅ Reduced compression work
✅ Lower operating temperatures
✅ Improved compression efficiency
✅ Reduced thermal stress on components
✅ Reliable performance during continuous operation
✅ Potentially lower energy consumption and operating costs

The ASC‑SPM‑2 range combines efficient two-stage compression with permanent-magnet variable-speed technology. The compressor can adjust its output according to changing air demand, helping reduce unnecessary power consumption during periods of lower production.

For facilities with substantial or fluctuating compressed-air requirements, the ASC‑SPM‑2 offers an efficient solution designed to deliver dependable airflow while supporting long-term energy savings.

Choosing the correct compressor size, pressure and configuration remains essential. Airstream Compressors can help assess your application and recommend a solution suited to your actual production requirements.
