In the Karoo, resilience is part of everyday life.

It's in the Angora goats moving across rugged landscapes, through changing seasons and difficult conditions. It lives in the farmers and farmworkers who continue to care for their animals and land with patience, skill and quiet determination, year after year.

That resilience carries through into the fibre itself. Mohair is known for its softness and lustre, but also its remarkable strength. Though delicate in appearance, it is a fibre made to last. When cared for properly, mohair garments and textiles can be worn, treasured, and passed down for decades rather than seasons.

In a world shaped by fast consumption, there is something deeply valuable about fibres that ask us to slow down. To value craftsmanship, longevity, and the story behind what we wear.

From the Karoo to the finished piece, resilience remains woven through every part of the mohair story.

Mohair South Africa recently hosted a well-attended Farmers’ Day and farmworker training session in Prince Albert, creating a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration.

The programme featured a range of presentations, including industry updates and Life Cycle Assessment feedback from Marco Coetzee (MSA), media guidance from Sarah (MSA), and animal welfare insights from Dr Mackie Hobson. André Smit from Technifarm PTY Ltd spoke about the use of thermal and security drones, while Dr JG Nel from Kyron Agri Eastern Cape covered key animal health topics, including supplementation and parasite management.

Practical farmworker training also formed a key part of the day, focusing on animal handling, basic health practices and mohair classing.

The event once again highlighted the importance of ongoing training and shared knowledge in strengthening the mohair industry.

Mornings in the Karoo unfold slowly, with Angora goat kids already at play across the rocky veld. They roam, climb, and settle into the pace of their surroundings, moving with ease through open spaces and rocky outcrops.

This environment shapes everything. Open land, natural grazing, and the consistent care of farmers and farmworkers all contribute to how these animals are raised, and, in turn, the quality of fibre they produce. It is a way of farming built on a deep understanding of both land and animal, grounded in balance and care.

Across South Africa, this approach is underpinned by the Responsible Mohair Standard (RMS), which supports responsible land management, animal welfare, and social welfare throughout the value chain.

Scenes like these offer a simple but important perspective of life on an Angora goat farm, where the land, the animals, and the people are closely connected. It is within this balance that South African mohair continues to be produced to a world-class standard.
