I have always embraced technology. From our first family computer to starting a business and harnessing its power to make my life easier. But it is vitally important for everyone to understand the darker side of technology. That sometimes the people behind the most innovative technologies are not entirely honest in their reasoning behind creating it...often manipulating vulnerabilities in our psyche to promote addiction, while we remain none the wiser.
Fake news, incitement of war and violence, hate speech, prejudice, a rise in some DSM-5 disorders, an increase in depression, an uptick in divorces, excessive online bullying and teen suicides and for some, an enveloping feeling of loneliness in an openly connected world, have all been exacerbated by the introduction of behaviour modifying software which is only getting “better” through machine learning and artificial intelligence.
The irony then, that I’d be sharing this here, but “The Social Dilemma” on Netflix is a must see for everyone - especially parents. And if you think this is all conspiracy theorist fair - remember that all the interviews are with the founders and co-founders of said software...straight from the horse’s mouth as it were.
This is not to say we should delete social media, but we could endeavour to be a lot more mature and responsible in its application.
Humanity needs to rigorously pursue awareness, education, tolerance and self-enlightenment - the inverse of that, and ignorance will be our undoing.
This documentary-drama hybrid explores the dangerous human impact of social networking, with tech experts sounding the alarm on their own creations.
