I have begun expanding my consulting services to the legal profession. I recently acted as expert technology witness for a local law firm and am offering this as another service going forward. Any legal professionals who require expert assistance in applying the law to cases where technology may be hindering or obstructing evidence, or where technology could enhance evidence, are welcome to get in touch with me.

Whenever someone steals your smartphone or laptop and it is protected by passwords, they will try all manner of means to get into said device.

One of the ways they will try is via a phishing attempt as per the attached screenshot. They will send you an sms or email pretending to be the manufacturer of your device in question and promising to assist you in recovering it. The message will include a link you are asked to click on. After clicking on this link you will be asked for your username and password you use to lock the device.

The trick is, this link is simply a trap to get you to willingly hand over your credentials. After they have them, the device and its contents, and more than likely any other account connected to it, will have been compromised. The only recourse after that is to reset passwords and then contact Apple, Google, or the account provider in question for assistance.

It is important to research the various ways in which you can protect your online credentials. Look for options such as 2FA, Authentication Keys, Biometrics in your device security settings and make sure they are enabled.

Apple’s new M1 system on a chip (SOC) solution is groundbreaking and industry shaking.

This is a bigger shift than their move from PowerPC to Intel in 2005.

It heralds with it a jump to up to two times faster processing and graphics power and up to three times higher power performance per watt. Layman’s terms? Faster machines and improved battery times.

This also translates to lighter and thinner Mac models and a decrease in prices in the long term.

And, finally, expect to see your favourite iOS apps running on Mac in the not too distant future.

It’s Techvember! Which means it is time to review some of the best new technology releases. First up...Xbox Series X...with Microsoft and Xbox.

4K UHD gaming at 60 - 120Hz with Microsoft's patented Velocity SSD Architecture, 8K HDR and 8 Core CPU means games look and play better, load faster and developers are given the tools to create some truly amazing next generation game worlds.

My opinions and review here later!

I have always embraced technology. From our first family computer to starting a business and harnessing its power to make my life easier. But it is vitally important for everyone to understand the darker side of technology. That sometimes the people behind the most innovative technologies are not entirely honest in their reasoning behind creating it...often manipulating vulnerabilities in our psyche to promote addiction, while we remain none the wiser.

Fake news, incitement of war and violence, hate speech, prejudice, a rise in some DSM-5 disorders, an increase in depression, an uptick in divorces, excessive online bullying and teen suicides and for some, an enveloping feeling of loneliness in an openly connected world, have all been exacerbated by the introduction of behaviour modifying software which is only getting “better” through machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The irony then, that I’d be sharing this here, but “The Social Dilemma” on Netflix is a must see for everyone - especially parents. And if you think this is all conspiracy theorist fair - remember that all the interviews are with the founders and co-founders of said software...straight from the horse’s mouth as it were.

This is not to say we should delete social media, but we could endeavour to be a lot more mature and responsible in its application.

Humanity needs to rigorously pursue awareness, education, tolerance and self-enlightenment - the inverse of that, and ignorance will be our undoing.

This documentary-drama hybrid explores the dangerous human impact of social networking, with tech experts sounding the alarm on their own creations.
