Because the knowledge is the same either way. The economics are what change.

An operation that needs research-backed answers has two options. Build the capacity in-house, or partner with a firm that has it already assembled. Every step in it exists for a reason. Skip one because the deadline is close, and the finding at the end loses the weight the whole project was built to carry. Speed up a stage that needed time, and the answer that arrives is faster, but no longer defensible.

A biased answer isn't defensible. It's just a faster route to a finding nobody can rely on.

Protecting the process is what makes the delivery worth having.

Most consulting works the other way around. A firm waits to be briefed, then applies what it already knows to the question in front of it. Useful, but limited to the ground that's already been covered.

NWU Enterprises is set up differently. The starting point is going out into industry, listening for the questions that haven't yet been asked, and then bringing the research capacity of the university to bear on them. The answer doesn't have to exist yet. It just has to be worth finding.

Directed research starts with a question that matters to an operation. It scopes the work around what that operation needs to decide. It produces findings that are ready to be acted on, not filed away for a journal submission.
