Let's dive into Generic ink vs Original ink. We will use an Epson EcoTank L15160 Printer A3, for example.

Here is exactly how generic ink impacts your printer, split into the good, the bad, and the technical realities.

The Real Risks (The Bad)
Printhead Clogging: Epson Micro Piezo printheads use microscopic nozzles that eject ink using microscopic physical vibrations (piezoelectric crystals). Generic inks often have lower filtering standards, meaning larger microscopic sediment particles can physically clog these tiny nozzles.

Chemical Imbalance and Corrosive Inks: Cheap generic inks sometimes use lower-quality solvents or incorrect pH levels. If the ink is too acidic or alkaline, it can slowly corrode the internal seals of the printhead, leading to internal leaking or permanent hardware failure.

The Pigment vs. Dye Trap: As mentioned before, the L14150 requires pigment black and dye colours. Many cheap generic brands sell kits where all four bottles are dye ink because it's cheaper to manufacture. Putting dye black into a system primed for pigment can cause chemical coagulation (clumping), instantly choking the printhead lanes.

The Benefits (The Good)
Massive Cost Savings: Third-party bottles can cost up to 70–80% less than original Epson 101 bottles.

Great for High-Volume Drafts: If you are mostly printing high-volume internal text documents, rough layouts, or everyday office paperwork, the minor trade-off in colour accuracy is usually unnoticeable.

The Manufacturer Warranty Trap
Legally, in South Africa (under the Consumer Protection Act), a manufacturer cannot automatically void your entire printer warranty just because you used generic ink. However, there is a massive catch:

The Catch: If the printer breaks down due to a mechanical or electrical failure (like a paper feed roller breaking), Epson must cover it. But if the printhead fails or clogs, and Epson's service centre finds third-party ink deposits inside the lines, they will declare the fault was caused by the generic ink and refuse to repair the printhead under warranty.

If you decide to go generic, follow these rules:
Stick to Premium Third-Party Brands: Avoid completely unbranded, unlabelled bottles from flea markets or obscure online shops. Stick to established third-party printing brands that explicitly formulate ink specifically for Epson EcoTank EcoFit systems.

Verify the Types: Double-check that the Black bottle explicitly says "Pigment" on the label, and Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow say "Dye".

Don't Mix Brands Continuously: If you find a generic brand that works well, stick to it. Chemical compositions vary between different generic factories; mixing two different generic brands together inside the tank can cause unexpected chemical reactions.

Print Frequently: EcoTanks hate sitting idle. If you use generic ink, make sure to print at least one full-colour page every week to keep the fluid moving through the printhead channels and prevent drying.

Cybersecurity starts with simple everyday habits. By locking your devices, enabling multi-factor authentication, using a VPN on public networks, separating business and personal devices, and thinking before clicking suspicious links or attachments, you can significantly reduce your risk of cyber threats. At Oh So Tech, we believe that staying secure online is everyone's responsibility, and a few smart precautions today can prevent costly attacks tomorrow.

What a troubleshooting adventure this week...

I ran fibre optic cable between two buildings specifically so lightning wouldn't travel through and fry everything. Smart, right?

Well... even with the fibre link (and media converters turning it back to Ethernet on each end), a lightning strike still managed to pop both media converters through the power lines.

Apparently Mother Nature laughed at my "fibre is isolated" theory.

Then, as if that wasn't enough, the client's fishtank decided to join the party — condensation built up, dripped straight onto their Mesh Router, and took out the Ethernet ports.

Between lightning attacking through fibre and a rogue fishtank committing hardware assassination... I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry.

Networking life, folks. Never a dull moment.
