A little taste of old-fashioned South African comfort food…
For this Flashback Friday, I'm bringing back an absolute South African classic: Asynpoeding (Vinegar Pudding).
If you’ve never had it before, the name might make you pause… vinegar in a dessert?! 😅 But trust me, this is one of those wonderful recipes where the ingredients somehow come together perfectly.
Asynpoeding is a soft, spiced baked pudding made with apricot jam, ginger and nutmeg, topped with a sweet vinegar syrup that soaks into the pudding as it bakes. The vinegar adds just enough acidity to balance the sweetness rather than making the pudding taste “vinegary.”
It’s often compared to malva pudding, and the two are definitely close cousins.
And of course… the important question: custard, whipped cream or ice cream? 😋
This is the kind of dessert that reminds me why some of our old recipes deserve to be brought back again and again. Simple ingredients, nothing fancy, just proper comfort food. 🇿🇦❤️
