I cried the day my daughter came and handed me her lunch money.

She looked up at me with the biggest smile and said,
"Daddy... you can use this for petrol."
She didn't know what those words did to me.

The night before, I had been telling her mum that I had to fill my tank for the second time that week just to drive to Midrand and meet a few potential clients.

We argued.

She reminded me that I had promised to attend our daughter's Parents' Day at school.
I reminded her that if I didn't find new clients, there wouldn't be much left to celebrate.

The conversation got heated.

I thought our little girl was asleep.

She wasn't.

The next morning she walked into the kitchen carrying her lunch money...

Trying to solve a problem no child should ever have to think about.

That moment broke me.

I've always believed that God didn't give me this amazing business and family just for me to survive.

We have built a business I am always proud of and I never want my kid to think we are struggling.

God blessed me this brand to build something meaningful.

Something that would provide for my family.

Something I could one day leave behind for my children.

But somewhere along the journey I realised I was building my business...
..without building my presence.

Even my kid thinks we are barely afloat because I still chase down clients every now and again.

Every day people search online for businesses like mine.

They don't find me.

Yet, we are one of the best law firms in town.

One day someone phoned me.
They loved what a client had said about my firm.

Then they asked,
"Can you send me your website? I'd like to learn more before we continue."
I didn't have one.

I promised I'd send something later.
We never spoke again.

That wasn't the only opportunity I lost.
It was simply the one I finally admitted to myself.

For months I kept saying,
"I'll sort it out next month."
Next month became months.

Until one day I decided enough was enough.

I invested in my online presence.
Not because I wanted to look bigger...
But because I wanted people to find me when they need me.

That changed everything.

Within weeks I started receiving enquiries from people who had already searched for my services.

People who already understood what I did.

People who already trusted me enough to reach out.

My first ten qualified leads came through my website.

Today I spend less time convincing people...
..and more time serving them.

By the time they call me, they've already seen my work.

They already know my prices.

They already know what to expect.
Sales conversations became shorter.

Decisions became easier.

And I no longer spend every day driving around hoping someone might need what I offer.
I still work hard.
I still trust God every single day.
But now my business has a remote office that never sleeps.
While I'm with my family...
While I'm in meetings...
Even while I'm asleep...

My business is still working.
If you're building a business but people can't find you online...

Maybe it's time to stop chasing customers...

And start making it easier for the right customers to find you.

Sometimes one decision doesn't just change your business.

Sometimes...

It changes what your children will never have to worry about again.

Informality, Spatial Design, and the Politics of “Clean Cities”: Rethinking Economic Participation in South Africa

This piece is a reflection on some of the ongoing tensions shaping South Africa’s cities and the way they are beginning to disrupt local economies. In recent years, protests have resurfaced across multiple cities with a kind of predictability. As election cycles approach, they intensify. The pressure behind them is real—economic strain, limited access, and frustration with how opportunities are distributed....
