Your follower count is not your reach.

Instagram regularly shows posts to people who don't follow the account, so a business with 2,000 followers can reach tens of thousands. What decides it? Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, has named the three signals that matter most: watch time, likes and sends.

In her latest article, Rebekka Strydom explains how each signal works, why 'sends' carry extra weight with new audiences, and which numbers in Insights are worth your attention.

Does more followers, likes and impressions mean your marketing is working?

Unfortunately not.

The reality is that those numbers can climb for months while revenue stays completely flat.

Vanity metrics measure attention. They don't measure whether that attention ever turned into an actual customer, and businesses regularly celebrate the first without ever checking the second.

The metrics actually worth reporting on are the unglamorous ones: cost per enquiry, enquiry-to-customer rate, and revenue per channel. They're less exciting in a monthly report, and considerably more honest. But they're the ones that consistently drive actual change in your business.

Let's start reporting on numbers that actually move revenue.

Heritage isn't simply something we inherit. It’s something we carry forward.

South Africa’s history is complex, shaped by many cultures, languages, traditions and experiences. And perhaps that’s what makes our heritage so powerful: there is no single South African story.

We see that diversity reflected in the incredible clients we have the privilege of working with – businesses, people and brands with their own stories, histories, cultures and ambitions.

Today, we celebrate the things that make us different, the stories that have shaped us, and the shared identity that connects us.

Different stories. One remarkable country.

Happy Heritage Day from all of us at We Do Digital.

People don't fear missing out on a product. They fear missing out on being the kind of person who got it first.

That's the actual engine behind scarcity marketing, and it's rarely about the item itself.

'Only 3 left' works less because of the item, and more because it turns a purchase decision into a status decision, whether the buyer consciously realises it or not.

Use this honestly and it's a genuinely powerful, fair nudge. Use it dishonestly – a fake countdown timer, a permanently 'almost sold out' banner – and audiences catch on faster than most businesses expect, and trust it even less the second time.

Let's use psychology honestly, and not as a gimmick, shall we?

Did you know the average Google Ads account wastes roughly a quarter of its budget on searches that were never going to convert?

According to Optmyzr's 2026 benchmark data, that waste usually isn't one dramatic mistake. It's a slow accumulation of broad match terms, outdated negative keyword lists, and campaigns nobody has actually reviewed since they were set up.

None of this shows up as an obvious red flag in your monthly report. It just quietly eats into the budget every single day, disguised as normal spend.

If your account hasn't had a proper audit in the last few months, there's a reasonable chance a portion of your ad spend is currently paying for clicks that were never going to become customers.

Let's find out exactly where your ad budget is actually leaking.

One of the most common gaps we find when we start working with a new client isn't in their marketing. It's in the handover between marketing and sales.

Marketing spends the budget generating interest. Then that interest lands with a sales team who has no idea what was actually promised in the ad the person clicked, what tone the brand used to reach them, or what questions they've already had answered.

The customer feels that gap immediately. They were spoken to one way in the ad, and a completely different way the moment a real person got involved.

The businesses with the smoothest customer experience usually aren't the ones with the fanciest marketing. They're the ones where marketing and sales are actually talking to each other, sharing the same information, and treating the handover as part of the experience, and not an afterthought.

Let's close the gap between what you promise and what you deliver.

Q: Should we just delete the subscribers who never open our emails?

A: Not immediately, but you should stop treating them the same as your engaged list.

Q: Why does that matter?

A: Mailbox providers watch engagement. Consistently emailing people who never open anything quietly damages your reputation with everyone else's inbox too, not just theirs.

Q: So what should we actually do with an inactive subscriber?

A: Send a genuine 're-engagement' email first, asking plainly if they still want to hear from you. If there's still no response, it's healthier to let them go than to keep emailing into silence.

Q: Isn't a smaller list a step backwards?

A: A smaller, engaged list will outperform a large, indifferent one, in opens, in clicks, and eventually in actual sales, every time.

Let's clean up your list before it quietly costs you your deliverability.

Unpopular opinion: Your website doesn't need more pages. It needs a clearer next step.

Most business websites are full of information and empty of instruction. A visitor can learn everything about the company and still not know what they're actually supposed to do next.

Every page should answer one question for the person reading it: what do you want me to do right now?

If you can't answer that in one sentence per page, neither can your visitor, and they'll simply leave and do nothing, which is the most common outcome on most websites, by far.

Let's give every page on your site an actual job to do.

Before you touch another keyword, audit these four things first.

1️⃣Your Google Business Profile. For local searches, this often matters more than your website. Check your hours, categories and photos are actually current.

2️⃣Your page titles. Not your content, your titles. Vague titles like 'Home' or 'Services' waste the single most important line search engines read first.

3️⃣Your site speed on mobile. If your own phone struggles to load your homepage on data, so does everyone else's, and Google notices.

4️⃣Your last content update. A page that hasn't changed in two years signals staleness, even if the information in it is technically still correct.

Most businesses want to fix SEO by adding more. Usually, the faster win is fixing what's already there.

Let's audit what's already on your site before adding more to it.
