Nearly half of SA's children have never had a parent read to them

Nearly half (47,6%) of the children in the country never read a book or drew (44,7%) with a parent or guardian.

Many parents are actively involved in their child's early development

Parents often spend time naming different things (46,2%), counting (39,2%) or talking about different things (38,3%) with children under the age of four.

English is only the sixth-most common language spoken inside the home

Just under a quarter (24,7%) of households in South Africa spoke isiZulu at home, while 15,6% of households spoke isiXhosa, and 12,1% of households spoke Afrikaans. English was spoken by only 8,4% of individuals at home, making it the sixth-most common language spoken inside the home. English is, however, the second most commonly spoken language outside the household (17,6%) after isiZulu (24,7%), with isiXhosa being the third-most common (13,0%) - Statistics South Africa's 2017 General Household Survey(Released on Thursday, 21 June 2018)
