Some good news!
We are excited to share a major environmental victory from South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA). This recent ruling directly affects how genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are approved in our country. Given our shared commitment to sustainable food systems and organic agriculture, this is an important development to reflect on.
After nine years of legal battles, the African Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) successfully challenged the approval of Monsanto’s (now Bayer) genetically modified drought-tolerant maize, MON87460. The court found that key decision-makers, including the Executive Council for GMOs, failed to apply critical environmental safeguards.
This case is important because it sheds light on how decisions about food and agriculture must align with health and environmental responsibility.
At Abundance, we continue to stand behind ethical farming practices, sourcing produce from farmers who care about the environment and avoid harmful chemicals or untested technologies. Together, we are shaping a healthier and more sustainable food system.
