Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech
Virgil Abloh, who died in November 2021 at the age of 41, was a light in the fashion world. His mother was a seamstress. He had a degree in engineering and a masters in architecture. He interned at Fendi, where he met Kanye West, also an intern, and the two were soon collaborating. So he had interdisciplinary chops. In 2013 Abloh founded his fashion brand Off-White, and then was hired by Louis Vuitton as its artistic director of menswear. His work was fresh and deep. “I’m trying to stand for a generation,” he told GQ. This exhibition examines Abloh’s career through its defining moments—an inspiring vision cut short.
“Figures of Speech” offers an unprecedented survey of the artist’s creative work over nearly two decades, pulling back the curtain on his process. Prototypes are presented alongside finished artworks, product designs and fashion to reveal his many sources of inspiration – from a centuries-old painting to commonplace signage at construction sites. Running throughout the exhibition is an emphasis on dialogue, which Abloh created through his inventive use of language and quotation marks, turning the objects he designed and the people who wear his clothing into ‘figures of speech’.
