For more than 40 years, Oldelft Ultrasound has advanced ultrasound transducer technology, helping leading OEMs deliver high-performance imaging in ever-smaller devices. From pioneering 4D ultrasound to developing solutions for paediatric care, Oldelft continues to turn complex engineering challenges into clinical reality, because every millimetre matters when caring for human life. In this article, we go behind the engineering of these highly-specialized miniature TEE probes.

How does one fit advanced 4D ultrasound imaging technology into a package small enough for a paediatric patient? At Oldelft Ultrasound, miniaturization isn't just about making components smaller. It is a complex engineering challenge that balances physical limitations with the critical needs of clin

Sustainability & Smart Manufacturing: How Intelligent Systems Reduce Waste and Energy Use

written by Lynne McCarthy For decades, sustainability in manufacturing was often treated as a compliance exercise โ€” a necessary cost tied to reporting requirements, emissions targets, and environmental regulation. Today, that mindset is changing rapidly.

Wireless Factory Automation - the new reality for production plants.

Power cables. Signal cables. Control wiring. Fieldbus networks. Entire factories have effectively been designed around the routing, containment, protection, and maintenance of physical connections. Cabling has been so fundamental to automation architecture that it has often been treated as an unavoidable constraint rather than a design choice.

That assumption is now starting to break.

The convergence of industrial wireless technologies, edge computing, and increasingly modular production systems is making a new question viable at scale: what does factory automation look like when cabling is no longer the default backbone?

This is not a speculative idea. It is a practical shift driven by operational pressure, safety requirements, cost efficiency, and the growing complexity of modern manufacturing environments.

a Case Study by Lynne McCarthy For more than a century, industrial automation has been physically defined by one thing: cables. Power cables.

The rapid diffusion of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping labor markets, organizational design, and sources of economic advantage. While technological capital has received substantial attention, comparatively less emphasis has been placed on the human cognitive and mental capacities required to complement, govern, and productively deploy AI systems. This paper advances the concept of brain capitalโ€”defined as the combined stock of brain health and brain skillsโ€”as a foundational economic asset in the AI-era. Drawing on interdisciplinary evidence from neuroscience, economics, public health, education, and organizational science, the paper synthesizes current knowledge on the societal and economic returns of investing in brain capital across the life course.

I propose an integrated analytical framework structured around five strategic levers: safeguarding brain health, fostering brain skills, studying brain capital, investing in brain capital, and mobilizing stakeholders. The paper argues that systematic underinvestment in brain capital represents a significant market and policy failure, with measurable consequences for productivity, resilience, and inclusive growth.

Finally, I outline implications for policy, corporate strategy, and future research, positioning brain capital as a critical complement to AI-driven growth strategies.

Conventional estimates of the global semiconductor market substantially understate its true economic scale. Prevailing market-sizing methodologies rely primarily on external sales data and therefore exclude a growing share of semiconductor value created and consumed internally by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), hyperscale cloud providers, and captive chip designers.

This paper introduces an expanded valuation framework that captures both market-facing and internally consumed semiconductor output, with particular attention to advanced packaging, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and China-based manufacturing capacity. Using this framework, the global semiconductor economy is estimated to have generated approximately $775 billion in value in 2024, with plausible growth to $1.5โ€“$1.8 trillion by 2030 depending on the trajectory of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption. The findings suggest that future growth will be highly asymmetric, favoring leading-edge logic and HBM while advanced and mature nodes face slower growth and heightened competitive pressure.

The evolution of cloud computing has entered a decisive new phase. Between 2025 and 2026, cloud adoption is no longer simply about scalability and cost-efficiencyโ€”it is about intelligence, agility, and sustainability. Enterprises are increasingly leveraging the cloud not only as a storage and compute resource but as a strategic platform for innovation. This next wave is defined by the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), the rise of edge computing, hybrid and multi-cloud strategies, and the emergence of quantum computing as a service (QCaaS).

The evolution of cloud computing has entered a decisive new phase. Between 2025 and 2026, cloud adoption is no longer simply about scalability and cost-efficiencyโ€”it is about intelligence, agility, and sustainability.

The transition from internal combustion engines (ICEs) to electric propulsion is reshaping the global automotive landscape. Central to this transformation is the adoption of advanced electrification architectures and highโ€‘voltage systems that improve efficiency, extend range, and support fast charging. This whitepaper examines the technological evolution, market dynamics, highโ€‘voltage solutions (400V, 800V, and beyond), value chain trends, key challenges, and a forecast for growth through 2035.

Electric vehicles (EVs) have moved beyond early adoption into mainstream automotive manufacturing. With global EV sales projected to exceed 20 million units in 2025โ€”up substantially yearโ€‘onโ€‘yearโ€”EV electrification continues to drive industry investment and innovation despite changing macroeconomic and policy conditions.

Highโ€‘voltage systems are a critical enabler of nextโ€‘generation EV performance, efficiency, and charging speed, as the industry moves toward architectures beyond traditional 400 V platforms.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transitioned from a niche technology into a central driver of economic growth, competitive advantage, and national strategy. Worldwide, governments and enterprises are investing heavily in AI infrastructure, talent, and commercial applications to drive productivity, innovation, and socioeconomic transformation. Forecasts project trillion-dollar markets and massive GDP contributions over the next decade, while strategic technology segments such as generative AI and machine learning lead the evolution.

Sustainability is no longer a โ€œnice-to-haveโ€ in businessโ€”it is a strategic imperative. Consumers, employees, investors, and regulators increasingly expect organizations to operate responsibly, reduce environmental impact, and contribute positively to society. Yet while many companies are implementing sustainable practices, far fewer are actively marketing these efforts. This is a missed opportunityโ€”both for business growth and for real-world environmental impact.

Marketing sustainability isnโ€™t just about good PRโ€”itโ€™s about telling a credible, authentic story of impact. And green marketing, the practice of promoting environmentally responsible products and practices, is the most effective way to communicate this.
