With our next First Friday on the horizon we wanted to give you insight into how we build gees at DoubleShift.

As you might know; we celebrate and cultivate our team culture every First Friday, and once a quarter our Pretoria and Somerset West team combine forces to elevate rapport and fuel the festivities.

Most companies would post polished team photos. We probably should - but that’s not always our style.

Instead, we made a mockumentary of our previous First Friday.

Episode 1: The Pilot (and the rest of the crew) introduces the characters of DoubleShift; the strategists, creatives, operators, and general weird and wonderful humans who make things work every day.

The events shown are mostly true.
The edits are… comedically motivated.
No egos or reputations were harmed in the making of this video.

Also joining us this year is the lovely Anchen Badenhorst who is a brand designer with a deep appreciation for authentic, human design. She believes in turning conventions on their head to create unexpected, memorable work - and having fun while doing it. You can instantly make her day by giving her a client who asks for tactility and texture in their branding. She approaches every brief with dedication, curiosity, and classic Taurus-like stubbornness when it comes to upholding high standards.

After hours, she likes to get crafty - from collages and clay pieces to illustration - purely for the joy of making. What does she bring to the table? Obscure film references and homemade banana bread, every now and then. We’re super stoked and excited to have her bring her creative energy, passion and dedication to the DoubleShift team.

Joining us as an Account Manager, she brings over 8 years of experience in account management and client services, having led strategic marketing campaigns and worked with high-profile brands like Nedbank across digital, activations, and integrated campaigns.
Outside of work, she’s all about family time and proudly embraces her inner golden oldie — old school music, classic vibes, and timeless favourites

We’re excited to have her bring her experience, creativity, and passion for impactful marketing to the DoubleShift team.

This is Rey

You might not know him personally, but if you’ve followed our work, you’ve already experienced the magic he brings to our team.

Being a DoubleShifter takes grit, stamina, creativity, and a level of commitment that most people never see, and Rey embodies all of it with heart. He shows up fully every single time, gives more than is asked, and somehow does it with a kindness and humility that sets the standard for all of us.
He is a legend, a genius and the kind of colleague who lifts the entire team by simply being who he is. He’s the guy you can count on for work solutions, personal support, movie recommendations, and apparently a mean game of Putt Putt. His attitude never falters. His delivery never dips. His character never wavers.
To be recognised as DoubleShifter of the Year is no small thing. It means you’re the GOAT among greats, the person who consistently raises the bar while making everyone around you better. Rey, you’ve earned every bit of this. We’re proud of you, grateful for you, and inspired by the way you show up for us all day after day.

You’ve seen a lot of what our Cape Town team has been up to, but our Pretoria also has GEES!

For our final First Friday, the Pretoria team traded laptops for lawn bowls. Same energy, same chaos, same charm… just with a little bit of sunburn. Here’s a little peek at the people who keep things rolling, literally and figuratively.

What a perfect Cape Town evening!

A breezy rooftop, a room full of incredible founders and the amazing energy of South African innovation.

We loved celebrating with The Open Letter and Finance Isle of Man at their year-end event. It kicked off with a fire panel of insights, and we heard from legends like Louis-Gillis Janse van Rensburg, Simon Ellis, Stefan Le Roux and Renier Kriel.

The best part? When Renier shouted out Jason’s top-tier meme game for the newsletter, saying: “If you’re not learning something, we want to give you a laugh.”
And boy, did they deliver on that promise! We were ushered into a full-on belly-laugh comedy set from the brilliant Schalk Bezuidenhout. A huge shoutout to Claudell and the wonderful team at Rooftop on Bree for curating such a special experience.

The Open Letter, we’re so chuffed to partner with you. Here’s to 2026! A year of championing the awesome founders and stories that move SA forward! 🥂

A week ago, we were at Innovation City Cape Town for The Open Letter’s event on marketing in the age of AI and frankly, we’re still processing all the insights.
The energy was incredible. From sharp insights on AI from top-tier panelists (including our own Kurt Schröder) to Renier Kriel and Takealot’s CEO Frederik Zietsman breaking down the future of e-commerce, the entire day was a masterclass in what happens when curious minds collide.

We are still buzzing and incredibly proud to collaborate with The Open Letter. This is exactly the kind of culture we believe in: one that pushes ambitious, creative businesses to do better and build brighter.

If you care about creating brilliant things, these are the rooms you need to be in.
