A $1 billion investment in South African bioethanol, and the opportunity is bigger than the headline.

Global agricultural company UPL, led by Chairman and Group CEO Jai Shroff, announced a R17 billion commitment at the 2026 South African Investment Conference to build a large-scale bioethanol production facility using sugarcane and maize feedstock. The facility is projected to produce up to 1.3 billion litres of bioethanol annually and will require the cultivation of approximately 400,000 hectares across the country.

Infrastructure South Africa brokered the key stakeholder engagements that brought this deal to the conference stage, and the project is now moving toward implementation.
