Great Albatross Research & Advisory is conducting an independent student accommodation study across Gauteng, on behalf of a property developer planning new student residences in the province. We are inviting current university students to share their accommodation preferences, challenges and priorities.
👥 Who we are looking for:
Current students at Gauteng universities (Wits, UJ, UP, SMU, TUT, VUT)
A mix of students living on campus, in private student accommodation, in private rentals and commuting
Students across different programmes, year levels and home regions
💻 What is involved:
One virtual focus group session, approximately 60 to 90 minutes
Held on a video call (Zoom or Teams)
📸 Your camera must be on for the full session, and the session will be recorded for research purposes
You will need a camera-enabled device and reliable internet
💰 Compensation:
R100 honorarium per participant, paid via eWallet within 24 hours of session completion
This is for your time and contribution, not a competition or prize
Participation is voluntary. You may withdraw at any time, but only participants who stay for the full session will receive the R100

Current students at Gauteng TVET colleges (Central Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni East, Ekurhuleni West, Sedibeng, South West Gauteng, Tshwane North, Tshwane South, Western)

We are looking to interview current Coastal KZN TVET College students to understand accommodation preferences, challenges, and priorities.

Who we are looking for:
Current students (18-month or 3-year programme)
A mix of students living on-campus (hostels), off-campus, and commuting

The Beyers Chocolates and Woolworths fallout has little to do with client overexposure or corporate bullying, as many have assumed. Strip away the noise, and what you are left with is a textbook case of misaligned expectations. Here is what the public record actually shows. 📋

The 2019 addendum to their exclusivity arrangement had a clear termination trigger. It expired on 31 December 2019 unless renewed in writing. No renewal followed.

Beyers acted on the literal reading of the clause. The agreement had lapsed, so the company was free to expand, acquire a second factory, and supply other retailers.

Woollies acted on a continuation-by-conduct reading. The commercial relationship had carried on, more than doubled in value between 2018 and 2023, and in their view, that meant the spirit and purpose of the original agreement was still in force.

Neither side forced the hard conversation between 2020 and 2023. Both proceeded on their own private interpretation of the same lapsed document. Beyers made factory and capex decisions on the assumption of freedom. Woollies made procurement and product development decisions on the assumption of exclusivity. By the time competitor shelves started showing similar products in 2023, four years of divergent assumptions had already been baked in. The escalation that followed was not the cause of the breakdown.

It was the moment the misalignment finally surfaced. The bullying allegations may yet have weight. The concentration risk was structurally real. But neither of those frames explains why the dispute happened in the first place. Misaligned expectations do.

The uncomfortable lesson 📌 for anyone sitting inside a long supplier relationship: silence after a contract lapses is not alignment. It is two parties privately writing different stories that will eventually have to be reconciled, and the longer it takes, the more expensive the reconciliation.
