🟦10 Years of The Design and Digital Studio – A Journey of Unapologetic Success 🟦 A Look Back and a Look Forward
If you had told me at 29 that I’d be here, four times Globally Recognised, a Top Entrepreneur at 34, ranked 3rd among The Top 10 Outstanding Young Leaders by Junior Chamber International, shaping industries with expertise in Strategy, as Creative and Business innovation - I would have laughed.

Not because I didn’t believe in myself, but because I would have set the bar even higher.
I wish I had a glimpse back then. I would have dared for more, pushed for bigger, chased beyond what even I thought was possible. And that’s the lesson

your ambition should always be bigger than your expectations.
Success isn’t about reaching a goal and stopping. It’s about the relentless pursuit of what’s next, what’s bigger, and what’s never been done before.

A decade ago, I sat in front of my laptop, wondering what to call this agency. I had no blueprint, no guarantees, just an idea and a vision that refused to be silenced.

What I didn’t know then was how far this agency would go, how many industries it would disrupt, how many brands it would touch,
and how many times my own name, alongside The Design and Digital Studio, would be honored on global stages.

At 39, I stand as the founder of an award-winning global design and digital agency, recognized by some of the most prestigious institutions.

I knew early on that success wouldn’t be handed to me, especially as a woman in business, especially in a male-dominated industry, and especially without the so-called “right” qualifications or financial backing. But I had what mattered: insatiable curiosity, relentless ambition, and the belief that my work would speak louder than any doubt cast my way.

I learned quickly that success isn’t about being invited to the table, it’s about building your own table and making damn sure people notice it.

From Boardrooms I Admired to Boardrooms I Owned
I built The Design and Digital Studio on hard work, strategy, and the courage to challenge norms. I went from admiring boardrooms to sitting in them, from pitching ideas to executing multimillion-rand projects.

The brands that once seemed untouchable? Now they’re on my client list. The agency that started as just an idea? Now it’s a force that has worked across London, Melbourne, New York, and Africa, shaping brand identities and digital experiences that leave lasting impact.

I wish I had a glimpse back then. I would have dared for more, pushed for bigger, chased beyond what even I thought was possible.

And that’s the lesson, your ambition should always be bigger than your expectations.

The Dark Side of a Growth Mindset: When Ambition Turns Toxic
We’ve all heard it: “Have a growth mindset, and you can do anything.”
It’s the mantra of the modern working world. Sure, it sounds great, and there’s definitely value in pushing yourself to learn, adapt, and grow. But let’s get real for a second —this whole growth mindset thing isn’t for everyone. In fact, if you're not careful, it can mess you up big time.

Constantly chasing self-improvement can quickly turn from ambition into relentless hustle. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you need to do more, be more, and achieve more. But guess what? That’s how you end up stuck in the toxic cycle of overwork, burnout, and never feeling good enough.

Here’s the truth: Not everyone needs to be in a constant state of growth.

Maybe you’re happy where you are. Maybe you’re not looking to push yourself to the edge of exhaustion just because someone on LinkedIn told you to “crush it.” And that's okay.

If you find yourself constantly chasing some unrealistic version of yourself because you’re told to believe you can always do more, maybe it's time to ask yourself: Who am I really trying to please?
Is this hustle even for me? The reality is, trying to be something you’re not isn’t just exhausting—it’s unsustainable.

Let’s be clear: A growth mindset is great when applied in a way that works for you.
But if you’re stuck in the cycle of toxic productivity, thinking you have to be endlessly striving, you’re setting yourself up for failure, not success. You don’t need to be an overachiever to live a fulfilling life.

But, cut my opinion; here's what the stats say: In the real-world context, highlighting the potential dangers of an unchecked growth mindset in South Africa’s demanding work culture.

Workplace Burnout:
According to a 2021 survey conducted by Carey South Africa, 45% of South African employees reported feeling burned out, with 68% citing excessive work pressure as the primary cause. An unchecked growth mindset can contribute to this constant pressure to "do more."

Mental Health in the Workplace:
The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) has reported a significant rise in work-related stress, with nearly one in three South Africans experiencing high levels of psychological stress. The drive for continuous growth without balance often leads to mental health struggles.

Overworking and Productivity:
A Stats SA survey found that South Africans work an average of 45-50 hours per week, which is well above the global average of 40 hours. The pursuit of productivity at all costs can easily become toxic, leading to longer hours but decreased well-being.

The Gig Economy and Overwork:
South Africa’s growing gig economy is pushing many professionals to juggle multiple jobs or side hustles. According to BusinessTech, 29% of South Africans now engage in freelance or gig work, which can perpetuate the “hustle culture” associated with toxic productivity.

Employee Engagement:
Research by Gallup in South Africa found that only 9% of employees are engaged at work. While this seems counterintuitive in a culture that pushes for continuous improvement, it points to the burnout and fatigue associated with an overemphasis on "constant growth" rather than sustainable work practices.

So before you sign up for the "always be growing" club, take a moment to think: Do you really need to be constantly leveling up, or are you just buying into the hustle hype?
Sometimes, the smartest move is to hit pause, enjoy where you're at, and realise that "good enough" is actually pretty damn good.
After all, there’s no trophy for burning yourself out.
