In Studying Under the Barrel of a Gun, director Tebogo Malope revisits a chapter of South African history too often left at the margins: the student resistance movement at Turfloop during apartheid.

Through memory, struggle, and collective courage, the film reminds us that liberation was not inevitable it was fought for by ordinary people who dared to imagine a different future.

More than a historical account, the film asks urgent questions about remembrance, identity, and the unfinished work of freedom. Whose stories do we preserve? Which histories do we allow to fade? And what becomes of revolutionaries when the revolution is over?

At a time when collective memory feels increasingly fragile, Malope’s work insists that the stories of the North matter, that archives matter, and that the lives of those who resisted deserve to be remembered.

Because freedom is not inherited. It is remembered.
