I’ve just spent time at one of the most extraordinary conservation organisations I have encountered in Africa.
Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary is not only a powerful brand with immense public support — it is, more importantly, a deeply credible, expertly run operation doing the hard daily work of rescuing, rehabilitating, protecting and rewilding rhinos.
Being invited to witness a rhino dehorning operation this week was an immense privilege. It offered a rare view into the level of coordination, expertise and commitment required to protect these animals in an increasingly pressured conservation environment.
What impressed me most was the integrity of the whole ecosystem around the rhinos: leadership, veterinary teams, rangers, anti-poaching operations, community relationships, and a culture of care that is tangible the moment you arrive.
Petronel Nieuwoudt has built something remarkable. And, as she so powerfully put it, it is always about the person behind the rhino. That idea stayed with me. Because meaningful conservation does not only protect wildlife; it also creates jobs, dignity, capability and hope within surrounding communities.
It was equally valuable to spend time exploring how stronger digital systems could help make support easier for Care for Wild’s global donor base — from individuals wanting to contribute online, to corporates seeking meaningful ESG alignment, to supporters wanting to adopt a rhino or engage more directly with the mission.
When the work is this real, digital strategy should do one thing above all: remove friction between goodwill and action.
My sincere thanks to Care for Wild, SANParks and the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency for the invitation and the insight.
A deeply inspiring few days.
