Three farmers have been found guilty of murdering Dumisani Phakathi in Mamokgalieskraal. The court ruled that the State proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt and rejected the accused’s attempts to shift blame onto one another.

According to evidence presented during the trial, Jaco Wessels Kemp, Louise Coetzee, and Gert Frederik van der Westhuizen attacked Phakathi on 16 September 2023 at a chicken farm. At the time, the men were braaiing when they noticed him walking past the gate to collect water from a nearby furrow. He was assaulted, dragged into a storage facility, and the attack continued until he died.

Later, his body was concealed in black refuse bags. In the early hours of the following morning, at approximately 02:00, police stopped Kemp and Coetzee on the R511 near Brits. During the stop, officers discovered Phakathi’s body hidden in the back of their bakkie. Van der Westhuizen handed himself over to authorities on 19 September 2023 after investigators connected him to the crime.

Although all three accused pleaded not guilty, witness testimony and evidence presented by the prosecution led to their convictions. Sentencing is scheduled for 16 March 2026.

The Tragic Loss of Gugulethu Thwala

BHEKISISA Mtshali from Lindelani informal settlement in Windmill Park near Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, is drowning in grief.

He's battling to come to terms with the brutal loss of his daughter, Gugulethu Thwala (24). She went missing on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, and was found three days later — dead and dumped in an open veld.

According to Bhekisisa, his daughter earned a living by selling food hampers in the area. She had gone out to collect money from a customer who owed her. He claimed that when she arrived at the customer's home, she was told the person wasn't home. A man from the neighbourhood allegedly volunteered to es**rt her. That decision would prove fatal. She was later robbed of her cellphone and murdered.

'She was everything to me'
"She was my firstborn. She was everything to me. Since her mother died when she was only two years old, she grew up without enjoying her mother's love. She was my comfort, my strength. Now she's gone. To make matters worse, she has left behind a three-year-old son," he said.
Betrayed by a 'helper'

That man who volunteered to walk with her was allegedly the last person to see her alive. Days later, after a desperate search, police and the K9 unit discovered her body in the veld on Friday morning, 6 February. The same man allegedly confessed to police and led them to where he had dumped her.

"I found my daughter in a very bad state. She was thrown away like rubbish. She had scars on her body. I cannot even describe some of the things I saw. They are too disturbing," he said. He believes the suspect did not act alone. "The way I found my child... it shows it was not one person. I strongly believe there are others involved," he said.

Bhekisisa's heartbreak is made worse by the fact that Gugulethu leaves behind a three-year-old son. "She was the best thing in my life. Now her child will grow up without a mother, just like she grew up without one," he said.

Anger and sorrow overwhelm him. "The person who killed my daughter treated her like she was nothing, like she was rubbish. I'm very angry. No parent should ever have to find their child dumped in a field," Bhekisisa said. He is pleading for justice not just for his daughter, but for all the young girls in the area who have gone missing.

To make matters worse, Gugulethu's phone was allegedly stolen and later wiped clean at a mobile shop. This raised suspicions that evidence was deliberately destroyed.
"There have been many girls who went missing here. Some were found dead. Some were never found. We must stand together as a community. Parents must protect their children. Men must protect women and children."

Gugulethu will be laid to rest in Newcastle, KZN, on Saturday, 14 February.

"My daughter did not deserve this. She deserved a future, and I don't want any parents to go through what I experienced," he said.

Captain Majang Skalkie confirmed the incident. She said a suspect has been arrested and charged with murder and possession of suspected stolen property.

A family from Limpopo is still in shock. This after a gogo (76) was allegedly butchered by her 43-year-old boyfriend.
The horrific attack happened in the early hours of Sunday morning, 8 February, in Rwanda village in Letsitele, Mopani district. Annah Malatji was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds to her back and upper body.

'He stabbed her in the heart'
Her heartbroken daughter, Beatrice Malatji, said she was relaxing at a local tavern when neighbours rushed in with terrifying news.

"They told me to hurry home. As I got to the gate, I found him there insulting my mother. When I went inside the yard, I found her lying in blood. She had stab wounds on her upper body. It looks like he stabbed her in the heart during an argument."

Beatrice said her mum had reported the suspect had been reported to the police six times before she was killed.
"My mother opened cases against him six times and even had a protection order, but he never stopped," she said.
The family claimed the suspect had a long history of abusing the elderly woman and had ignored the protection order. Now the grieving daughter fears for her life and the safety of other witnesses.

"We are scared of this man. If he gets bail, he might come after us. The court must not release him," she said.

Adding to their pain, the struggling family said they don't even have enough money to bury their beloved gogo.
"We don't have food or money for a coffin. We are asking kind-hearted South Africans to please help us give her a dignified funeral," she said.

Police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the incident.
"A knife believed to have been used in the commission of the crime was recovered," he said.
Ledwaba said police are investigating a case of murder.

Justice served as husband found guilty of murdering Lebowakgomo Nurse

By Nakampe Lekwadu

Justice has finally been served for a nurse who was allegedly shot and killed at Lebowakgomo Hospital, after her 58-year-old husband was found guilty of her murder.

The Polokwane High Court on Wednesday, 12 February, found Molabe Fannie Seribishane (58) guilty on all charges relating to the murder of his 52-year-old wife, Mumsy Seribishane.

The accused faced the following charges:

Count 1: Murder
Count 2: Contravention of a Protection Order
Count 3: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
Count 4: Unlawful Possession of Ammunition

Judge Pillay found the accused guilty on all counts, concluding that the State had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The court ordered that Seribishane remain in custody and remanded the matter to 15 April 2026 for sentencing.

On 22 October 2024 at approximately 6pm, Mumsy Seribishane, who was employed as a nurse at Lebowakgomo Hospital, was shot and killed near the hospital gate while reporting for night duty.

The suspect fled the scene in a white VW Golf 7. A case was initially opened at SAPS Lebowakgomo and later transferred to the Provincial Office, where it was assigned to Captain Phaladi Makola for further investigation.

On 13 November 2024, members of the Provincial Tracking Team and the Provincial Investigation Unit (PIU) arrested the accused in Lebowakgomo.

During the arrest, police seized a 9mm pistol that had previously been reported stolen in Seshego, as well as a white VW Golf 7 believed to have been used in the commission of the crime.

Further ballistic investigations positively linked the recovered firearm to the murder of the deceased.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the conviction and reiterated that gender-based violence remains a serious problem in society.

“We applaud the hard work by the investigation team under the leadership of Captain Makola, who put together a compelling and convincing case before the court. We also commend the good work by the National Prosecuting Authority team who worked closely with the police to ensure justice is served for the family and relatives of the deceased,” concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe.
