Most people accept the first number they're offered — not because it's fair, but because they never prepared a reply.

You don't need to be pushy to negotiate. You need one prepared, evidence-based sentence.

A simple approach that keeps it professional:

Do your homework. Know the realistic pay range for the role and your trade in your area before the conversation.
Anchor on value, not need. Talk about what you deliver — the tickets you hold, the downtime you prevent, the audits you pass — not your bills.
Use one clear line: "Based on my experience with [specific skill] and the market for this role, I was hoping for a package closer to [range]. Is there room to get there?"
Then stop talking. Let the silence do the work.

Worst case, you hear "no" and you're exactly where you started. Often, though, there's more room than people assume — and preparation is what unlocks it.

Same principle as everything we teach: prepare your evidence.

It starts with getting in the room. → Grab the free ATS-ready CV template (link in the first comment).

A robot reads your CV before any human does.

It sounds dramatic, but it's how hiring works at most large companies now — Jobscan found an ATS (the screening software) at 97.4% of Fortune 500 companies in 2026, and big SA employers are no different.

The software pulls your CV apart into fields and checks how well it matches the advert. If your layout confuses it, or your words don't line up with the job, you can be filtered out before anyone reads a line.

The fixes are simple:

• One clean column — no tables, boxes or photos. • Plain headings: Experience, Skills, Education. • The same skill words the advert uses (only where they're true for you). • Save it as a normal Word file with your name on it.

That's it. You're not tricking anyone — you're making sure your real experience actually gets read.

Our free ATS-ready CV template already follows every one of these rules. Grab it free — link in the comments.

You're qualified. Your CV just isn't getting through the filter.

Here's something most job-seekers don't know: at big companies, your CV is usually read by software before any person sees it. And even once a human picks it up, the first look is only about 7 seconds (The Ladders).

So a good, hardworking artisan gets passed over — not for lack of skill, but because the CV was built to look nice instead of to be read by the system that screens first.

The three things that trip people up:

• Fancy layouts (columns, boxes, photos) the software can't read. • Not using the same words the advert uses. • Writing what you were "responsible for" instead of what you actually achieved.

Good news: all three are quick to fix once your CV is in the right format.

We built a free ATS-ready CV template that does it for you — one clean page, prompts telling you what to write, tips for every section. Works in Word, Google Docs and Canva.

The people who get offers aren't lucky. They walked in with their evidence ready.

Most people prep for an interview by hoping they'll "sound natural." The ones who get hired do something different — they choose their best real examples in advance and practise telling them clearly.

There's decades of evidence behind this: Schmidt & Hunter's landmark research found structured, evidence-based interviewing is among the strongest predictors of who actually performs on the job. Interviewers remember results, not adjectives.

The tool is STAR:

Situation — set the scene in a sentence.
Task — what needed to happen.
Action — what you specifically did.
Result — what changed because of it.

Pick one question — "tell me about a time you solved a problem" — and write your answer as S-T-A-R. Clumsy the first time, sharp by the third.

This is the CareerFit spine: prepare evidence, not answers.

Start with a CV that gets you into the room. → Grab the free ATS-ready CV template (link in the first comment).

Interviews aren't won by sounding natural. They're won by being prepared.

Most people walk in hoping the right words will come. The ones who get the offer walk in with their best stories already chosen and practised — because interviewers remember results, not vague answers. (Decades of research by Schmidt & Hunter found structured, evidence-based interviews are among the best predictors of who actually does the job well.)

The trick is a simple structure called STAR:

• Situation — set the scene. • Task — what needed doing. • Action — what you did. • Result — what changed because of it.

AI can write you a polished interview answer. It can't give you a real one.

A generic, well-worded response sounds fine — until the panel asks the second question. "Talk me through your part in that." "What would you do differently?" That's where a script falls apart and genuine experience holds up.

The fix isn't to memorise better answers. It's to prepare real evidence: an actual situation, the decision you made, and what happened. Proof you can defend under pressure, because you lived it.
