Approximately 5,500 residents have been left homeless after a devastating fire swept through Site 5 in Du Noon, destroying over 1,000 informal dwellings.
Gift of the Givers has described the incident as the worst informal settlement fire in the Western Cape since 2013 and has already provided meals to about 3,500 people, with relief efforts continuing.
The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre is still assessing the full extent of the damage due to the scale of the incident, while site clearance operations are underway.
Members of the public wishing to assist can donate non-perishable food, hygiene items, nappies, and blankets at selected City fire stations.
