The suspects, identified as Gabriel Katongo, 21, of Jamaica Compound; Toanga Mubanga, 20, of Matero; Maxwell Mwiinga, 19, of Emmasdale; and Mulenga Bwalya of Chaisa, who later died, allegedly stole the money from a vehicle parked at a farm.
The victim, Emmanuel Munthali, 52, of Noyi Bazer Farm in the Makeni Grey Zulu area, noticed the theft and pursued the suspects along 7070 Road.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the pursuit ended when the suspects, driving at excessive speed, failed to negotiate a curve near ZNS LDB Headquarters and collided with an oncoming Toyota Hilux.
"Upon inspection, the Toyota Allion was discovered to have false number plates, initially displayed as AIE 9374 but later identified as BLB 7604," Mr Hamoonga said.
He said following the collision, a mob gathered at the scene and assaulted the suspects before police intervention.
He said all surviving suspects were rushed to the clinic for medical attention.
