Dear State Counsel, Senior Counsel and Learned Colleagues, my name is Katongo Chali and I’m standing for the position of Council Member in the upcoming LAZ elections. Here are my core pillars and why you should vote for me:
1. Amendment of the CPD Rules:
1.1 Rule 9- renewal of the PC shouldn’t be tied to attaining CPD points.
1.2 Rule 8- no exemption for any class of advocates.
1.3 Rule 16- non-participation in CPD shouldn’t be a ground for lodging a complaint to the LPC.
2. The pro bono policy shouldn’t be tied to the renewal of the PC.
3. ⁠Full inclusivity of Copperbelt lawyers in LAZ affairs.
4. ⁠Advocating for the welfare of in-house counsel.
4.1 lobby for policy to allow in-house counsel to practice in some areas with enough measures in place to avoid conflict of interest.
4.2 lobby for engagement of stakeholders and institutions to make it mandatory for institutions and government agencies to pay for PC’s for in-house counsel.
5. ⁠Lobbying and advocating for the welfare of the entire membership as a whole.
