STATE UNCOVERS PLOT TO DESTABILISE NATION AHEAD OF GENERAL ELECTION

Highlights from the statement issued by Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security Permanent Secretary, Mr. Dickson Matembo during a joint press briefing with his counterpart, Information and Media Permanent Secretary Mr. Thabo Kawana

✅ The State has uncovered an alleged plot to interfere with Zambia’s electoral system ahead of tomorrow’s General Election, resulting in the apprehension of suspects, including three former senior Government officials.

✅ A joint investigations team comprising defence and security agencies conducted an intelligence-led operation which culminated in the apprehension of the suspects.

✅ Three former senior Government officials were allegedly providing technical services aimed at disrupting the electoral system and are currently in lawful custody.

✅ The State has also extended invitations to Japhen Mwakalombe, Mwila Kakana and Sensho Banda to assist with ongoing investigations after they were allegedly found in possession of more than K7.3 million.

✅ The source and intended purpose of the funds is yet to be established, adding that the three individuals had, through their lawyers, indicated that they would only be available after August 14, 2026.

✅ Investigations have also uncovered sensitive military intelligence on some of the electronic devices seized from the three, raising concerns over possible unauthorised access to protected information.

✅ In a related development, the State has apprehended a 56-year-old Kenyan national identified as Michael Njuka, who is alleged to have been contracted to engage in cybercrimes targeting the State.

✅ Further dismissed allegations circulating on various media platforms that the State had abducted individuals in connection with the investigations.

✅ Stated that former Ambassador Martha Lungu and journalist Hannah Katontoka were apprehended to assist with ongoing investigations but have since been released from lawful custody.

✅ Meanwhile, Mr. Maternity said defence and security wings remain on high alert as Zambia heads to the polls on August 13, 2026.

✅ Indicated that aw enforcement and security agencies would continue taking all necessary lawful measures to safeguard national security, protect critical systems and prevent attempts to undermine the electoral process.

✅ Urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant and to refrain from activities that could threaten peace and stability before, during and after the elections.

✅ Mr Matembo cautioned that individuals found attempting to compromise national security, interfere with critical systems or engage in criminal activities would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

HON. PETER KAPALA TAKES DEVELOPMENT MESSAGE TO LUBWE RESIDENTS

Lubwe, Luapula Province — August 12, 2026

UPND Chifunabuli South aspiring candidate Hon. Peter C. Kapala has taken his development message to residents of Lubwe during a road show, highlighting the development projects being implemented across the district and the country since the UPND Government came into office in 2021.

Addressing residents, Hon. Kapala said the progress already being seen in the district demonstrates the Government’s commitment to improving the lives of Zambians. He said more development is possible when communities continue to support President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND Government.

Hon. Kapala promised that the Government will continue working to expand access to healthcare and education, including the construction of more hospitals, health facilities and schools to serve growing communities.

Since 2021, the UPND Government has introduced free education from early childhood to secondary school, recruited thousands of teachers, expanded the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), constructed and upgraded school infrastructure, and supported vulnerable learners through bursaries. The Government has also expanded school feeding programmes and invested in health facilities and other community infrastructure.

Hon. Kapala urged the people of Lubwe to vote for development by supporting President Hakainde Hichilema and UPND candidates on August 13, saying continued support will help bring more development projects to Chifunabuli and Lubwe.
