Real-World Proof That Mining and Farming Can Work Together – Sovereign Metals – Kasiya Rehabilitation Trial

Can land be mined and then farmed again? The community of Kasiya, Malawi, is living proof.

In 2024, Sovereign Metals undertook a landmark rehabilitation trial at the Kasiya Rutile Project — demonstrating that responsible resource extraction and agriculture are not mutually exclusive. With full approvals from the Government of Malawi and oversight from the Ministry of Mines, the Malawi Environmental Protection Agency, and the Department of Water Affairs, the trial showed how mined land can be restored to productive farmland — often producing better yields than before.

First Quantum Commits K12 Million to Boost Education in Solwezi

As First Quantum commemorates 30 years of operations in Zambia, the company has deepened its commitment to human capital development by handing over infrastructure and learning materials worth over K12.9 million to several schools in Solwezi, with a focus on creating a conducive learning environment and providing the tools necessary for academic excellence. The handover ceremony, held at Kimiteto Primary School, highlights the critical role of private-public partnerships in elevating the standards of education and ensuring holistic development for learners in North-Western Province.

The infrastructure portfolio officially handed over includes a newly constructed 1×4 classroom block at Kimiteto Primary School, complete with renovations, a security wall fence at Mush*tala Primary School to enhance safety, water reticulation facilities across seven schools to improve hygiene and sanitation, and a modern ablution block at Kipemba School. Airtel Africa Announces Successful Data and Messaging Testing of Starlink Mobile in Kenya

Airtel Africa and SpaceX are pleased to announce the successful testing of data and messaging services with Starlink Mobile in Kenya, in a significant step towards bringing satellite-to-mobile connectivity to millions of people across Airtel Africa’s 14 markets.

The testing was done in “no connectivity” areas – locations where terrestrial mobile networks did not have a signal. In these areas, Starlink Mobile was seamlessly activated, allowing 4G compatible smartphones access to Starlink’s constellation of 650 launched satellites to keep them connected.

PROFLIGHT ZAMBIA’S CASHLESS TRANSITION ENHANCES EFFICIENCY, SECURITY, AND PASSENGER CONVENIENCE

As Zambia advances towards a modern, digitally enabled economy, businesses across key sectors are rethinking how they deliver services, improve efficiency, and build trust with consumers. In aviation—where safety, precision, and time are paramount—digital transformation is no longer optional; it is essential.

’s rollout of cashless payments, introduced in November 2025, represents more than a service upgrade. It reflects a deliberate move towards safer, faster, and more efficient transactions, while supporting Zambia’s broader transition to a cashless economy.

WHY GLOBAL COMPANIES ARE PARTNERING WITH MALAWI’S MINING SECTOR

Malawi is increasingly attracting attention from international industries looking for the reliable supply of critical minerals. One example is the Kasiya Rutile and Graphite Project, which has drawn interest from global mining companies, lenders and commodity traders.

While this growing international interest is positive for Malawi, it has also raised questions about how large capital intensive mining projects are developed and what partnerships such as offtake or marketing agreements actually mean.

FIRST QUANTUM EMPOWERS OVER 1,000 WOMEN THROUGH BUSINESS PROGRAMME AS ZAMBIA CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

First Quantum has trained more than 1,000 women in entrepreneurial and business management skills through its Women in Business programme, providing women in Kalumbila with the tools to transform informal trading into formal enterprises that can access financing and participate in the mining value chain.

The milestone, announced during a graduation ceremony where 30 women completed the latest skills development programme in Kalumbila, comes as the world marks International Women’s Day 2026 under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls” a call that resonates deeply with the programme’s mission to break down barriers preventing women in Kalumbila from accessing economic opportunities.

Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Permanent Secretary Subeta K. Mutelo commended First Quantum’s approach, noting its alignment with the government’s Rural Enterprise Development Initiative (REDI) programme.
