The Sanctity of Human Life: A Christian Reflection on the Tragic Murder of Ms. Hellen in Kalumbila District
The tragic murder of Ms. Hellen Kamutumbe in Kalumbila District of North-Western Province of Zambia represents a grave violation of the sacred dignity of human life and a painful reminder of the dangers of mob justice in society. From a Christian perspective, every human being is created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27), and therefore life is sacred, inviolable, and worthy of protection regardless of accusations or suspicions. The papal encyclical Evangelium Vitae by Pope John Paul II strongly affirms that human life is a divine gift that must be respected and protected at all times, condemning all forms of unjust killing and violence. Mob justice, especially when driven by fear and superstition such as accusations of witchcraft, contradicts Christian teachings on mercy, justice, and love of neighbor, and reflects a breakdown of moral responsibility and respect for human dignity within society.
In the light of Christian values, this tragic incident calls for a renewed commitment to building a culture of life that promotes peace, justice, and respect for every human person. Evangelium Vitae urges Christians and society to reject violence, uphold lawful justice systems, and defend life through education, moral formation, and compassion, reminding believers that true justice must be guided by mercy, truth, and due process. We therefore pray for the eternal rest of Ms. Hellen, comfort for her family, repentance for the perpetrators, and moral conversion for society so that such acts of violence may never happen again. Ultimately, the Gospel of Life challenges all Christians to stand firmly against mob violence, protect the vulnerable, and foster a society rooted in love, justice, and the sanctity of human life.
