Reflections

We concluded our potato harvest and the yields were terrible.
A lot of lessons learnt.
The drought really impacted us in such a negative way due to the unavailability of water.

We experienced Boreholes drying up.
Then we worked overtime on Gensets due to load shedding on the little water we had.
We experienced so many pests due to the dryness.
Then we had the warthogs and monkeys running in the fields also looking for food.
They started digging our potato
You could cry.

We pray for a good rain season, so that as farmers we can recover.
Even the monkeys and warthogs can have food.

Have a fabulous planting season.
It’s time to plant!
Mentorship class still on. It’s not too late to register
Don’t give up.
May Jehovah restore every farmer who lost this season

He tours Zimbabwe’s farming areas to monitor how Zimbabwe farmers are doing with very yielding Starke Ayres hybrid varieties and climate-smart Charter Seeds techniques.
Reginald recently published an article on how semi-determinate Starke Ayres tomato hybrid has transformed the lives of people in the Zvimba area of Zimbabwe.
The article attracted world-wide attention with inquiries from many countries.
Zvimba soils are not particularly productive. They tend to be sandy and are typical tropical soils with low pH, low fertility and a high fixation capacity.
Semi-determinate round Tomato variety STAR 9009 is part of a range of very high yielding climate-smart Starke Ayres varieties which cater for different markets. Charter Seeds has developed techniques to allow these varieties to realize their very high potential in Zimbabwe.
Starke Ayres, Charter Seeds and the Zimbabwean farmer form a formidable combination. This combination will turn climate change into an asset for Zimbabwe and make Zimbabwe into a horticulture powerhouse. This week we focus on the farmer. Paying absolute attention to detail Zimbabwean small scalers are some of the very best, or even the best, in the world.
Using the abundant radiant energy in Zimbabwe and absolute attention to detail Zimbabwe farmers are producing open field yields comparable to or better than anything in the world, including greenhouses.
Many producers have transformed from subsistence farming to commercial producers targeting requirements of specific markets with their surpluses. They use specific varieties to target the requirements of these markets.
Farmer Story Chikuwe of Zvimba grew semi-determinate round STAR 9009 for a specific market at a specific time. He transplanted 8,000 plants on 15 August 2024 and 30,000 plants on 25 September 2024.
