Iran War Update!
The President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, has apologized to neighboring countries for recent attacks carried out by Iran in retaliation.
In his statement, President Pezeshkian said the Iranian government has now ordered the military to stop attacks on neighboring countries. He added that Iran will only use force if an attack on Iran comes directly from one of those countries.
However, reports suggest that attacks by Iran’s military are still ongoing in some neighboring countries. The apology has not stopped the attacks, at least not yet.
For context;
The President of Iran is the head of government, but he does not hold the highest power in the country. The real authority lies with the Supreme Leader, who controls the military, the security services, and the overall direction of the state. Therefore the president functions more like a prime minister with limited authority.
Since the death of the Supreme Leader, Iran is being run by a temporary leadership council, as required by Iran’s constitution. This council includes the President, the Chief Justice, and a cleric from the Guardian Council.
This arrangement will remain in place until a body called the Assembly of Experts chooses the next Supreme Leader. It is worth mentioning that since the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979, there has only been one leadership change at the level of Supreme Leader.
The first Supreme Leader was Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who ruled from 1979 until his death in 1989. After his death, the Assembly of Experts selected Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader.
