Long before newspapers, radio, or social media, African societies had their own powerful communication systems.

In Ancient Egypt, “word-pictures” carved onto monuments were used to celebrate leadership achievements and shape public perception — an early form of strategic reputation management.
Across many African communities, talking drums, storytelling, and village square gatherings served as powerful mass communication tools used to mobilise communities, share important information, preserve history, and influence public opinion.

Modern Public Relations may have evolved digitally, but its roots in Africa were already grounded in influence, engagement, storytelling, and community connection.

At ZABC, we celebrate the rich heritage of communication while shaping its future.
What traditional communication tool do you believe had the greatest impact in African communities?
