Transforming Zimbabwe’s Agriculture: Key Takeaways from Bikita Ward 12 Field Day
At a recent field day hosted at Mbuya Badarai plot, top agricultural leadership outlined critical advancements for rural development and food security.
The Guest of Honour, Mr L. Munamati, who is Director for Agriculture, Planning and Development in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development, applauded the success of the host farmer being attributed to localised field school training, good agronomic practices, and strong collaboration with local Agriculture Business Advisors.
Mr Munamati also urged farmers to practice tailor-made cropping, matching cereals seed varieties to their specific ecological regions for enhanced productivity as demonstrated by Mbuya Badarai.
At the plot, Mbuya Badarai is practicing mixed farming which includes fish farming, poultry, cereal farming, horticulture and orchard; supported by solar powered water system.
Speaking at the same occasion, the Grain Marketing Board CEO Dr. Edson Badarai encouraged farmers to make use of 1,804 decentralised ward based buying points for grain aggregation, cutting out exploitative middlemen and slashing transport costs. GMB's commercial arm Agro Dura also buys grain at competitive prices at the buying points. At these same points farmers can access inputs from different partner suppliers.
Dr Badarai implored farmers to deliver grain to GMB and enjoy swift payments within a week.
