We aim to inform readers about sporting, artistic and cultural events that one can become involved with and to let people know about interesting places that they might like to visit in and around Harare. Articles that will, hopefully, help identify some of the beautiful birdlife and wildlife that one may encounter on one's travels around Zimbabwe. We focus on current initiatives that give positive

ideas on how to recognise and preserve some of our country's diverse flora and fauna and include write ups about some of the less privileged people in our society.

HI All
Five years ago, I bought a brand-new Manual, Isuzu 2.5D double cab from Autoworld – it satisfied all that I needed in a vehicle at that stage of my life – reasonable price tag, powerful, robust, and comfortable. During that time, I have traversed over 110k km driving from Mana Pools to Masvingo; Nyanga and even Vic Falls driving on all sorts of terrain from smooth tar to corrugated, dirt roads and many with severe potholes. Not once did I have any issues with it until…… I hit a snag last Saturday some 10km past Beatrice on the fine Masvingo road.

Way back during my time in the Police I was sent on a defensive driving course. The one important lesson I gained from that was how to control a car when you have a tyre blow out on you when driving at speed – hold on to the steering when with both hands and DON’T change direction or you will roll the vehicle. I’d heard a loud bang emanating from the left of the car just before I crossed over the new Trabablas flyover but thought nothing of it until I found myself standing on the edge on the wide tarmac some 40km later feeling very unhappy for myself.

I, like so many other, non-savvy motor mechanics had hardly listened to the salesman informing me where to find things like the Jack, tools and spare wheel – I was, after all recovering (at the time of purchase) from my last broken collarbone, so had to ask my son to drive it out of the showroom

Soon after the blowout a very kind young gentleman driving past noticed my predicament and stopped to help change the tyre. Informing me that he was one of those guys that sit on the side of the road near Beatrice fixing all sorts of tyre issues. (Ian Mufaso 0710-339-284 – looking for a job!)

When I travelled down to Jabulani a few weeks ago I had used that same route cutting across the 80km from Mvuma to Gweru. I’d heard that this road had deteriorated considerably in the 30 years since it was last tarred. So, I was pleasantly surprised to come across about three vehicles full of eager CMED workers not far from Lalapanzi. Guys on the back of the first truck would shovel sand off the side with a follow-up team using hard brushes to smooth the sand and ram it down. Truck number 2 would then have someone throw wet tar onto these sandy spots which was, in turn, spread out over the sand. The overall process was made firm and complete with a following heavy steam roller.

Some sections of the Mvuma road had maintained their original condition needing no attention. The remaining 30-40km was completely done in just a few days meaning that my drive back that Sunday was a whole lot smoother with almost all the road patched up

The obvious thought that I came away with was “Why can’t similar teams be used to make the same transformation of the Bulawayo Victoria Falls Road?” Using the same teams such a temporary solution would surely only take a few weeks- far less if they doubled the size of the CMED teams.

On my first trip down to Gweru, I’d left home before 6am and arrived in Gweru well under 4 hours. My drive back this weekend, however, was not so successful - I stupidly departed Gweru late morning, finally arriving back home at 5.30pm. The section from Chivhu to Harare was the worst – so many buses, trucks, and speeding vehicles. It was like Kyalami Racetrack with everyone in such a hurry to reach their destination – I reckon many were driving at over 200kph often with little regard for oncoming traffic – almost a 3 lane highway in many sections.

Time to reintroduce Speed traps on our highways. Bottom line – best way to drive to Bulawayo is if you leave very early in the morning – otherwise take the KweKwe route. Ciao Mike G.

FBC Zim Open is one of Zimbabwe’s premier golf tournaments, traditionally hosted at the Royal Harare Golf Club, attracting top professional and amateur golfers from across the region. The event is part of the Sunshine Tour schedule. It is known for combining competitive golf with a strong social and corporate atmosphere. It also makes you see golf as an experience, not just a sport. This year's edition had that familiar energy, a mix of competitive golf, good company, corporate presence and families simply making the most of a weekend outdoors.

Walking in, the setting does a lot of the work. Sponsor tents lined up neatly, golf carts cutting across the fairways, groups of spectators trailing behind players, and an overall calm that you don't often find at most sporting events. It feels lively, but never chaotic.

What also stands out is just how much focus the sport demands. Right before a player steps up to hit, everything around them quietens. People stop mid-conversation, movement slows, and all eyes lock in. You just have to be present.

On the course itself, South African golfer Altin van der Merwe gave spectators plenty to talk about. The 29-year-old closed out the final round with a 4-under-par 68 to win the 2026 FBC Zimbabwe Open, finishing at 21-under-par and four strokes clear of the field. He had carried a four-shot lead into Sunday and never looked troubled, sealing what was his maiden Sunshine Tour victory.

Not everyone in attendance was tracking the leaderboard. For many, the draw was simply being outside on a pleasant Harare afternoon, catching up with people, networking over a drink, or just taking in the surroundings at their own pace. Golf creates the perfect setting for that kind of day.

Moving around the course also gives you a real appreciation for what the players and their caddies go through. Every shot is thought out, every approach is deliberate. There is a level of patience involved that is easy to overlook when you are watching from a distance.

The FBC Zim Open continues to hold its place as one of the more enjoyable events on the local sporting calendar, firstly for what happens on the course, and also for the kind of day out it offers to anyone who shows up. Click here to view the leaderboard summary.

Friday, 1st May saw us making our way to Msasa Village for the much-anticipated Annual Marondera Market , a once-a-year gathering that has quickly become a highlight on the local calendar. And like most beautiful things, it all began quite simply: Hannah Taylor and Emsie Brits, local Marondera ladies who are both deeply passionate about their town, their community, and supporting local businesses, share that after the dreaded COVID lockdowns and the lack of gatherings, they felt Marondera needed something to look forward to and bring its diverse communities together.

This year’s market featured around 60 stalls, yes, 60! For us, this particular visit felt even more meaningful because Softrite, has just opened an office right at Msasa Village, conveniently located next to Colly’s Cafe & Deli Colly's Cafe & Deli . The office will be operating on weekdays from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, and being in that space during such a vibrant event made the milestone feel even more real.

The market itself was a celebration of local creativity. Stall after stall showcased beautifully crafted products. One of the highlights was taking the time to actually speak with the stallholders, hearing how their businesses started, what drives them, and the journeys behind their brands.

It was also refreshing to finally meet some of our clients face-to-face, particularly at a time when most interactions happen over the phone and in messages. I won’t lie, there were some proud moments too, especially every time I heard, “Oh, you’re the Bambazonke lady!” Safe to say, my heart did a few happy leaps.

Adding to the lively atmosphere, Proton brought along mascots to entertain the crowd. Now… this is where things took a slightly unexpected turn for me. The moment they approached, I instinctively froze, yes, at my age! In my defence, my long-standing fear of animals clearly decided to make an appearance, and for a brief moment, I had to remind myself they’re just people in costumes. Still, it made for a good laugh after.

Although I hadn’t planned on doing much shopping, one stop proved impossible to resist: Nuts Art, with their range of flavoured pecans, cashews, and macadamias. They were so good at convincing people to taste the nuts, and once you did, you understood why. There was simply no walking away without a purchase (or two).

And of course, no trip to Marondera feels complete without a stop at Surrey. For many travelling from Harare, it’s almost a tradition, whether it’s their famous meaty pies or their well-loved biltong. So naturally, after wrapping up at the market, that became our final stop before heading back.

All in all, the Annual Marondera Market continues to live up to its purpose, bringing people together, supporting local businesses, and creating moments that linger long after the day ends. If this year was anything to go by, it’s definitely one to keep on your calendar.

It's that time again - the famous St John’s Mukuru Derby Day that is taking place right now. This year’s event started on the 27th of April and will run until the 2nd of May, featuring participation from over twenty schools.

There’s certainly plenty of entertainment for everyone. Regardless of what kind of sports you prefer, whether your interest lies in hockey, rugby, or soccer, there’s always something happening on the fields.

Apart from sports, the variety of food stalls adds another layer to the experience. I personally decided to try out Fat Ants, and I must admit, it lives up to the good reviews.

With so many sports matches, my attention was attracted by the rugby fixtures. There’s something about the physicality of the game.

The intensity and the constant back-and-forth make it impossible to look away. The anticipation alone is enough to get your adrenaline going, and the action on the field only amplifies that feeling.

I chose to watch the final rugby match of the day between St. George’s College 1st XV and St Alban’s College 1st XV (SA). As expected, it was a thrilling encounter, with St. George’s securing a solid 39–26 victory. It capped off what was clearly a victorious day for them as their 2nd XV also claimed a 29–12 win against Lomagundi College, while their 1st XI soccer team won 2–1 against Churchill School.

Now, if you plan to visit this event for the upcoming days, you might be able to guess whose team you should support!

While the holiday period lasts for our schools, this event seems like a good opportunity for you to have some fun. It’s casual and definitely worth visiting with both your family and your friends. See you there!
