Victoria Falls and Zimbabwe’s tourism story is deeply tied to nature, from wildlife and wetlands to forests, rivers and communities that protect them.

Today, Zimbabwe joins the world in commemorating the International Day for Biological Diversity under the 2026 theme: “Acting Locally for Global Impact.”

As destinations across the world push for more sustainable tourism, conservation and biodiversity are becoming central to the future of travel itself.

From community conservation initiatives like CAMPFIRE to wetland protection and sustainable tourism efforts around areas like Victoria Falls, local action continues to play a role in protecting ecosystems that support both livelihoods and tourism.

Healthy ecosystems don’t just protect wildlife — they protect water, climate resilience, food systems and entire tourism economies.

🌍🇿🇼 Happy International Day for Biological Diversity.

🏨 Victoria Falls’ luxury tourism landscape is set for another major shift with the launch of Albida – Victoria Falls, a new high-end boutique retreat expected to open on 1 September 2026.

The all-inclusive development by the Victoria Falls Safari Collection will feature 13 private villas designed to target the growing global demand for exclusive, experience-driven travel.

Speaking to Romo Media, Head of Sales and Marketing at Africa Albida Tourism, Anald Musonza said the project reflects changing international travel patterns and growing confidence in Victoria Falls as a premium tourism destination.

“We are seeing quite a big shift in international travel where this luxury high-end market is growing,” said Musonza.

He noted that global travellers are increasingly prioritising destinations perceived as safe, private and experience-rich, with some tourists redirecting travel plans from regions affected by instability toward destinations like Victoria Falls.

“Victoria Falls in Southern Africa is becoming an option which is very safe and offering high-end facilities,” he said.

Musonza added that the investment signals confidence not only in Victoria Falls, but in Zimbabwe’s broader tourism growth trajectory and Vision 2030 ambitions.

The development is also expected to strengthen Victoria Falls’ positioning within the competitive regional luxury tourism market as demand rises for boutique, personalised and high-end African travel experiences.

🍲🇿🇼 Matabeleland South has wrapped up the final provincial edition of the 2026 Amai’s Traditional Cookout Competition — turning the spotlight onto Zimbabwe’s rich food heritage and growing Gastronomy Tourism sector.

Known as the Rainbow Province, Matabeleland South showcased traditional dishes including umxhanxa, amacimbi, ucaba, ibhobola, umbhida we delele, and amatemba, while professional chefs introduced modern twists inspired by local ingredients.

Beyond the food, the competition continues to position culture, tourism and community empowerment together — creating opportunities for women, youths and marginalised communities while preserving indigenous knowledge.

Government officials also highlighted Gastronomy Tourism as a key pillar of the Ilifa Lethu, Nhaka Yedu campaign aimed at strengthening domestic tourism and celebrating Zimbabwean identity.

🇿🇼 With all provincial competitions now complete, attention now shifts to the national finals.

Zimbabwe’s tourism conversation is no longer just about destinations — culture, food and faith are increasingly becoming part of the experience.

The inaugural Roman Catholic Church Amai’s Traditional Cookout Competition was held today at Kutama Mission in Zvimba, bringing together communities, youths and people with disabilities through traditional cuisine and cultural heritage.

The event highlights the growing role churches can play in Religious and Gastronomy Tourism, while also preserving Zimbabwean food traditions for younger generations.

According to Tourism Minister Barbara Rwodzi, Zimbabwe recorded an 11% increase in international arrivals and a 35% rise in domestic arrivals during the first quarter of 2026.

🏃🏾‍♂️🌍 Ubuntu Race Eyes Bigger Role In Victoria Falls Sports Tourism Growth

Set for May 24 as part of Africa Day commemorations, the Ubuntu Race is continuing to position itself as more than just a marathon, with organisers aiming to grow it into one of Victoria Falls’ signature annual sporting events.

Now in its 4th edition, the event features 5km, 10km and 21km race categories, bringing together competitive runners, recreational athletes, corporates, schools, wellness advocates, and visitors under the spirit of Ubuntu.

Speaking to Romo Media, Planning Committee Advisor and Wellness Coach Mabasaashe Mutukwa, popularly known as Coach Mabasa, said the race has evolved from a small fitness-focused community event into a broader platform centered on wellness, tourism, and social impact.

“Sporting events like the Ubuntu Race are instrumental in diversifying Victoria Falls’ tourism portfolio,” he said.

“While the destination is renowned for adventure activities, events like ours introduce a lifestyle and wellness dimension to the experience.”

Coach Mabasa said the event is also helping position Victoria Falls as a year-round destination by attracting fitness enthusiasts, social runners, and purpose-driven travellers from different backgrounds.

Beyond tourism visibility, organisers believe the race can contribute to the local economy through accommodation bookings, transport services, food businesses, vendors, and extended visitor stays.

This year’s edition will also incorporate advocacy initiatives around gender-based violence awareness, anti-drug campaigns, and chronic illness awareness.

“Our goal is to build a race that people look forward to every year—not just for the run itself, but for the experience, the cause, and the sense of community it represents,” said Coach Mabasa.
