Edmonton is among Canada’s least safe-feeling cities, according to a new Liaison Strategies poll, with a net safety score of -8, tied with Vancouver. 📉

Fifty per cent of respondents said Edmonton is somewhat or very unsafe, while 42 per cent felt it was safe or very safe. That marks a 32-point drop from 2017, one of the largest declines in the survey.

Quebec City ranked safest at +57, followed by Ottawa (+56) and Charlottetown (+51). Toronto scored -18 and Winnipeg -28.

News coverage was the top factor influencing perceptions (28%), followed by personal experience (23%), only 12% pointed to crime statistics. Edmonton’s overall crime rate rose 3.2% in 2025, with property crime jumping 10.1%.

A course miscalculation at the Edmonton Marathon has cost 13 runners their chance to compete in the Boston Marathon. 🏃

The Aug. 16 race was 674.7 metres longer than the regulation 42.2 km. The Boston Athletics Association accepted the finishing times of 92 runners, but rejected the 13 whose times had been adjusted to account for the extra distance.

Race officials initially stood by their course measurement but later confirmed the error, citing an issue with a mapped detour. Two course records were still broken on the longer course.

“The community that gathers through this event is resilient, passionate, kind and deserving of nothing less than our very best,” said race director Tom Keogh. “We commit that this distance miscalculation does not happen again.”

A U.S.-Venezuela oil deal announced by President Trump is “classic hyperbole” and not a real threat to Alberta’s energy sector, according to Heather Exner-Pirot of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. 🛢️

She says Venezuela may squeeze out a couple hundred thousand more barrels, but those reserves are “expensive and risky to get out.” The market remains bullish on Canadian oil and gas, with some producers hitting all-time highs.

Exner-Pirot notes the real lesson is optionality: “Don’t be tied to a single customer.” Canada’s solution lies in the Pacific Basin and Asian market, with Trans Mountain already full and Japan, Korea and China eager for more West Coast barrels.

The federal government also extended its fuel excise tax, passing some of the windfall from higher oil prices on to customers.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has dragged West Edmonton Mall into the Canada-U.S. trade war, as a punchline. 🇺🇸

Speaking on CNBC, Bessent dismissed the idea of a “tit‑for‑tat” trade war, arguing the U.S. economy is far larger. “What are they going to do, take their two submarines from the Edmonton mall and sic them on us?” he asked.

The submarines were removed from the mall more than a decade ago. Bessent also accused Prime Minister Mark Carney of turning the dispute into a political fight.

Finance Minister François‑Philippe Champagne is expected to meet Bessent at the G20 finance ministers’ gathering in North Carolina later this week.

Edmonton Public Schools has cancelled all international excursions for the 2026-27 school year, citing global conflict, civil unrest and “further unpredictability and risk.” 🌍

The board cited a recent trip where students faced civil unrest, along with global fuel shortages, public health concerns and ongoing military conflict.

Thousands of students across Canada have had trips cancelled or modified. The Vancouver and Calgary Catholic boards are approving trips case-by-case, while Winnipeg schools have banned U.S. travel.

“I was pretty sad when I found out,” said 16-year-old Zoe Cogger, whose dance and running trips to the U.S. were cancelled. Her school is now planning a run in Jasper National Park instead.
