The quilting club at St. Andrews United Church in Edmonton, active for over 50 years, is looking for new members. The 18 women, aged mid-50s to 101, meet every Tuesday to make quilts and baby blankets for local charities. President Maile Bower says no experience is needed, just the ability to sew a little or baste quilts. This year’s quilt sale runs Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with proceeds going to Pilgrims Hospice and the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation. Cloth donations are accepted year-round.

The Alberta government has launched the Alberta Satellite Rebate Program, a one-time $1,000 payment for rural and remote households that can’t access broadband internet. The rebate covers satellite hardware, installation and applicable taxes on purchases from an authorized dealer made between Aug. 11, 2026 and March 31, 2027. Technology and Innovation Minister Nate Glubish said the rebate ensures cost isn’t what stands between rural households and getting online, while Rural Municipalities of Alberta president Kara Westerlund called it another pathway to connectivity. Applications are open until March 31, 2027.

Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered his Thanksgiving message from St. Francis Xavier High School in Edmonton, where he studied as a teenager, urging Albertans to support Canadian unity ahead of the Oct. 19 referendum. The province’s ballot includes 10 questions, the last asking whether Alberta should remain in Canada or hold a second binding referendum on independence. Carney cited federal housing developments, a proposed Edmonton-Calgary high-speed railway and a pipeline connecting Alberta’s oilfields to the West Coast, saying “we can’t achieve any of this if we’re divided. You can’t build big things on fault lines.” He added that generations of Albertans helped build the country: “It’s yours, it’s ours, and it’s worth fighting for.”

Isabel McRae, executive director of BRITE Beginnings Early Learning and Childcare Centre, says Edmonton police never warned her or four other daycares in the plaza about a shooting near Saddleback Road and 27 Avenue last Thursday, despite Sweetgrass Elementary going into lockdown. Two teens, 15 and 16, were hospitalized and a boy who knew both victims faces charges. McRae redirected a bus already en route to the daycare and is now seeking a meeting with police leadership to change the automatic alert system so child-care spaces are notified like schools. Edmonton police did not notify the broader public the day of the shooting, and CityNews has not heard back from them.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to be in Alberta in the coming week as the Oct. 19 referendum approaches, with voters casting ballots on several issues including whether to separate from Canada. The outcome won’t automatically trigger separation, but will send a message to both sides of the debate. The federal government recently designated the Pacific Link oil pipeline as the first major project of national interest, a move Premier Danielle Smith called proof that co-operative federalism can work. Canada’s foreign influence commissioner has notified more than 60 groups and individuals involved in the referendum campaign about obligations to report foreign influence, while Elon Musk’s calls for Alberta, Quebec and Saskatchewan to separate were rejected by Carney, Smith and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe.

DonnaJean Wilde, 61, of Welling, Alta., planked for five hours at the Huntsman World Senior Games in Utah, beating her own 2024 record of 4 hours and 30 minutes. Wilde, who also holds the record for most push-ups in an hour by a female, began planking after breaking her wrist 12 years ago and now does it daily, even writing a book from the position. She said the crowd carried her through the final 15 minutes.

Alberta is ordering Edmonton to revert to its old infill housing rules, giving the city three months to comply. Premier Danielle Smith says current policies are too permissive and harm homeowners through lower property values and parking problems, while Mayor Andrew Knack calls the decision uninformed and insulting, warning it will push growth to the city’s edges and raise property taxes. The province also told Calgary to keep its current rules after that council backtracked earlier this year. Edmonton will have 18 months to review its land-use rules, while Calgary’s review is expected to finish in 2027.

Edmonton police say two teens are in hospital and a youth has been charged following a shooting in southwest Edmonton.

EPS says officers responded around 1:20 p.m. to a weapons complaint outside a shopping centre near Saddleback Road and 27 Avenue. Reports also indicated gunshots were fired from a vehicle, which fled the scene.

Two teenage boys, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, were reportedly struck and taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. Sweet Grass School was temporarily placed on lockdown due to the proximity of the incident.

Police note that one male youth, who was known to both teens, has been charged in connection with the shooting, and an investigation is ongoing.
