A Pilot PR travel series…
Next stop: Lithuania 🇱🇹 & Latvia 🇱🇻
One of the most unexpected (and brilliant) family holidays – an e-biking, self-guided adventure covering 600km from Klaipėda to Riga. Nothing quite bonds like a bit of shared adversity - and with map reading, a few rainy days, tired legs and very sore bottoms, there was plenty of that.
But god it felt good to be off our devices, outside in the fresh air, discovering new places - clean lakes, virgin forests - and ending each day feeling like we’d properly accomplished something.
Huge thanks to Baltic Bike Travel for getting the formula exactly right: great quality bikes (key), a well-thought-out itinerary, seamless bag transfers each morning and evening, and a brilliantly varied mix of hotels-most of which we slept through entirely after long days in the saddle.
Highlights that will stay with us:
✨E-bikes or not - covering up to 70km a day is no joke (and deeply satisfying)
✨So much good beer in the Baltics - Lielvārdes Tumšais, a dark Latvian lager, a firm favourite
✨Lithuania’s love of soup - Šaltibarščiai (cold beetroot) was surprisingly delicious
✨Evenings playing cards with our almost-grown kids - simple and wholesome
✨Our lakeside stay in Beberliņi Forest outside Liepāja - rowing to our tent was a moment
✨Swimming in the Baltic (which really is baltic)
✨Kuldīga - worth the trip alone: great energy, pop-up dining, and a swim in the Venta waterfall after a long ride
✨A lowlight: the sore bottoms are real - next time, significantly better gear
✨A final rooftop dinner at Gutenbergs in Riga to round it all off
Would we do it again? Yes, we would.
