A Brief History of Idemili in Anambra state.

Idemili derives its name from the Idemili River and the central water goddess Idemili, whose name translates to "Pillar of Water" in the Igbo language.
Idemili is a woman and She is venerated in Igbo cosmology as a deity of purity, justice, fertility, and protection.

The ball python or royal python is considered the sacred child and physical messenger of the Idemili goddess.
The Sacred Python is called (Eke Idemili).
All the town in Idemili worships and protect the Python (Eke Idemili).
There are 17 towns in Idemili region of Anambra State, it split across two local government areas: Idemili North and Idemili South.

It is a strict traditional taboo (alu) to kill, harm, or eat a python anywhere in Idemili land.
Pythons often move freely through homes and compounds without harming residents.

Tradition holds that if a python dies or accidentally killed within a community, it is given a ceremonial burial similar to that of a human being to appease the Idemili goddess
