You may no longer need to queue at a court to get an affidavit.
Nigeria’s justice system is taking another step into the digital space.
The Federal High Court of Nigeria now has an E-Affidavit Client Portal through which members of the public can apply for certain affidavits online, without having to physically visit a Federal High Court premises.
From the comfort of your home or office, an applicant can register, complete the required information, upload documents where necessary, make payment and track the application. Once processed, the verified affidavit can be obtained electronically.
The service covers different categories, including affidavits relating to change of name, correction of date of birth, loss of documents, change of signature, next of kin, marriage and other purposes.
What does this mean for a Benue resident?
It means that for matters covered by the Federal High Court's e-Affidavit service, distance, transport costs and time spent visiting court may no longer be part of the process.
But there is another detail many people may not know:
Benue State Judiciary also has an online e-Affidavit service.
The Benue Judiciary's platform already provides online applications for several affidavit and declaration services, including declaration of age, loss of items, change of name, next of kin and others.
So, if you need an affidavit, don't automatically assume that your first step must be a trip to the courthouse.
Check whether the particular affidavit you need can be processed electronically.
Digital justice is not about putting everything online overnight.
It is about removing unnecessary journeys from processes that can safely be handled online — and making access to public services a little easier for the ordinary citizen.
