This year and Koen Taselaar were asked to be part of the jury for the Limburg Biënnale in Marres Maastricht. Selecting from 2500 works and curating a room with them (combining with our own works) was a real pleasure.
Thanks to the wonderful artists Daphne Bleeker, Milena Anna Bouma, Gerrit Bronkhorst, Kelly Christogiannis, Nadia D'Alessio, Andrea Michael, Nancy van Dijk, Esther Koeman, , Sofía Magdits Espinoza, Wouter Paijmans, Jaro Pilzecker, Emperatriz Placido San Martin, Elisa Verkoelen 𓅻, lara warson and to all other jury members Bodil Ouédraogo, , Morena Bamberger ART, ilkepaddenburg, , misha 🪨, Arash Fakhim Esmaeilian, , Henri Jacobs, Mounir Eddib, and the Marres team!
The exhibition is on show until August 23.
Some words on the selection: Reflecting on the final selection, we were reminded of Jan Verwoert’s statement: ‘Art is like doing the dishes.’ During the selection process, we primarily followed our intuition, drawn to works crafted with care and often imbued with a sense of playfulness. We did not want to predetermine an overarching theme or a fixed layout; instead, we wanted these to emerge organically from the selection itself.
But to a person with a hammer, everything looks like a nail. While we were making our selections, our identical twins were born, and we slipped into an intense ‘baby bubble’ that played out largely within four walls. Looking at the chosen works now, they seem to form a surreal living room: a place where dinosaurs might be pets, visitors arrive with ducks on their heads, and the staircase transforms into a steep learning curve.
