Go Eco and Mountains to Sea brought the people who do the mahi everyday in our taiao, to kōrero about what Waikato Region needs to continue momentum and kotahitanga. Safe to say the kōrero has been flowing! 🌊

A few months ago we filmed a series capturing a Wai Ora wānanga at Pureora Forest park with Go Eco led by Erena Wehi-Barton and Te Kura Taiao o Te Nehenehenui

This month, Pureora Forest Park was highlighted as part of the conservation land at risk of commercialisation through the Conservation Amendment Bill.

As an organisation we oppose this Bill and encourage you to do the same, by making your submission here:

“Te Mahi a Matakore”
We had an awesome time gathering and learning all about kākano (seeds) in Te Rohe Pōtae.

We learnt about kākano, such as those from the Kahikatea Tree, which have fruit packed with nutrients and were gathered in Autumn to eat in the lead-up to Winter.

From identifying kākano and their fruit and testing their viability, to storing the seeds - this mahi is fun AND important!

We’ll be sharing more of this wānanga in a longer video very soon. Til then, here’s a kōrero Edz shared about seed gathering from Ngāti Maniapoto: Te Mahi a Matakore.

We all love whitebait, so here are two ways we can help them return each season.

1️⃣ Fencing access to streams.
Īnanga, which make up 90% of whitebait, need tall, dense grasses to lay their eggs and provide shade. Fencing keeps stock from trimming the grasses and trampling precious spawning sites.

2️⃣ Trapping
Īnanga eggs are a favourite for land based pests like stoats, ferrets, possums and rats. To ensure the īnanga eggs have the best chance at survival - it’s important to set traps near waterways once they’ve been fenced.

We all love a whitebait fritter - but how much do we actually know about these tiny tāonga? 🤔
