What does it take for a team to find their rhythm? True leadership happens when everyone moves toward a shared goal with balance, trust, and connection.

Partnering with Fergs Kayaks in Auckland, we explored what this looks like in action. After a detailed safety briefing from Ed, the challenge was simple: paddle together. But the real lesson lay in learning how to communicate, trust each other, and align individual strengths to work as one.

Throughout the new Waka Leadership Innovation Lab, three powerful themes surfaced:

🤝 Connection Unlocks Creativity—By creating safe, supportive environments, teams shift from stress to collaboration and build emotional trust that sparks innovation. We use neural exercises to supercharge this process.

🚀 Shifting Perspectives Drives Growth—Stepping into outdoor activities or new experiences broke routines and revealed fresh approaches to problem-solving. Physically moving our bodies enables us to shift thinking.

🌟 Leadership Flow Brings Teams Together—Clear communication and collaboration turned shared goals into visible results, both on and off the water. Peer-to-peer environments surface leadership in all generations.

🧠 Understanding Connection with a Polyvagal Lens

Have you ever noticed how hard it is to focus or truly connect with others when you’re stressed? How often do teams get stuck in that survival mode—reacting instead of thinking clearly? 🤔

In all our workshops and labs, we first consider how the state of your nervous system affects everything:
👁️ how you see the world,
🚦 how you make decisions
🗣️ how you connect with others.

Using the Polyvagal Informed (PVI) model from Dr Stephen Porges, we teach teams how to shift out of fight-or-flight mode. Through play 🏄‍♀️, teamwork 🤝, or outdoor movement, teams move into connection where trust builds and creativity flows.

☀️ Harness Team Flow State�

🌊 How does your team respond to a challenge? On a sparkling day at Harbour, nobody would have guessed it was midwinter. 🌞 With a brief window of sunshine, flanked by rain and wind, Jane, Jerry, Craig, Christine, and Emma braved the cold to paddle a giant SUP together.
🛶 Each person found their rhythm, balancing individual effort with collective flow. Can you guess which team member wasn’t a swimmer? No chance—you’d never tell!

Something we've found especially effective for driving in our Innovation lab model is blending teams cross-industry and generations. Craig was able to stabilise the group not only with his paddle but also with knowledge of how to surface insights in business - especially AI & tech. While Jane led from the front with perfect not only standing up physically but also with her capability in bringing a top down view of business.

🌊 The heaviness of the morning’s discussions was temporarily set aside for the water task - which shifted focus into the present moment. Getting into physical flow the team worked through their tasks subconsciously, setting themselves up for breakthrough thinking back on land.

Did you know theory isn’t just a driver of connection for parents and children? It applies to teams too. When we work with people we feel safe with—who see, hear, and understand us as humans—we build trust and lasting anchors: people we can turn to for sound advice, support and encouragement. It's the foundation of a great leadership model.
At Fergs HQ, we explored this dynamic with leaders like new Fergs owner, Ed Hines, who shared his on-and-off-the-water leadership insights. And seasoned field leader Tane Dunlop brought perspectives from business, outdoor navigation, and adventure training. Seeing the big picture and supporting the group ensures no one is left behind. 🌍
Special congratulations to Chloe Hobbs, our student event lead, who seamlessly took the reins for the day. Passing the torch using Dan Sullivan’s “Who not How” model, Liz affirmed her trust in Chloe’s ability—proof that vulnerability and trust grow talent.
