DESIGNER IMPACT // In this economy where tightening of the marketing budget is common, it can be even more important to use cold, hard data to prove the ROI that warm, fluffy design work - when done right - can generate.

I chatted with Kendyl from Creative Launchpad by Rocketspark about the impact designers can have on their client's businesses. My favourite part of the convo:

🤓 Unpopular Opinion Alert 🤓

"If you're focusing all your attention on sales in marketing, you're missing a beat!"

SERIOUS QUESTIONS:

🤔 What would happen if a new competitor came to town selling the same products as you?

🤔 What would happen if your existing competitors significantly dropped their prices?

🤔 What will happen if your customers suddenly don't have access to the incomes they've had in the past?

🤔 How many of your customers would stay with you, just because they love and believe in you?

Sales Marketing focuses on sales (duh) and solves the short-term problems of cash-flow and product turn over.

BRAND Marketing however focuses on values, relationships and loyalty. It solves the problems of longevity and future proofs your Sales Marketing from potential external threats.

So it's important to spend an appropriate amount of your time, energy and marketing budget on BRAND marketing, even though the pull to focus solely on immediate sales is a strong one.

It's like the test with the kids and the marshmellows : you can have one now or two later... which would you choose? 🤔 🍬🤔🍬🍬

Here's the good news: with a good brand strategy, you can have both! 🏆

🙈 30th September 2021 🙈

That was the date of my last feed post!!

For someone who works in marketing, content creation and social media management, this is a HUUUUGE faux pas...
..or IS IT?? 🤔

The answer to that question is: IT DEPENDS.

I can happily report that 2022 was easily my most profitable year in 20 years of self employment. And without a single social media post...

So was it an intentional refocus of my time and energy in to money making activities, or was it a case of being too busy to sit down & design my next few months puzzle feed tiles?

Honestly, a little bit of both! But here's the thing: MY business doesn't rely on social media for connections, referrals, introductions and : ultimately : sales.

MY business relys on real world introductions, networking, relationships, demonstrated expertise, trust and integrity to gain clients and enable me to become MY version of successful... time on the ground, on the phone, on zoom, over a cuppa (or a beer!), and time emmersed in my clients workplaces, problems and day to day lives.

MY ideal clients are NOT social media savvy, they don't spend much time here, and they DON'T check my social feeds when doing their due diligence (otherwise known as stalking!) before they get in contact with me.

So it makes sense that in busy times, I focus MY time on the key activities that keep bringing the enquiries and keep the wheels turning.

I KNOW this : and I'm confident in doing & saying so : because I've done for my business what I do for my clients'. A series of 6 brand marketing strategy workshop modules that I designed to provide clarity around your brand, your customers, your website and your marketing.

If you've ever had questions about what to post, when to post, whether to post or whether your business would survive without it, Module 6 : Marketing, uncovers where best to spend:

The humble business card! How do you feel when you hand yours over?

Does it fill you with pride, or make you want to hide? 🙈

There's more to making a confidence-boosting business card than you might think:

🍃 logo
🍃 colour
🍃 layout
🍃 photography
🍃 card stock
🍃 texture, and
🍃 print finishes

all play a part in making you memorable on paper and reinforcing the values of your brand.
